Debutant medium-pacer Sudeep Tyagi completed a ten-wicket haul on Ranji Trophy debut to get Uttar Pradesh's 2006-07 campaign off to a great start, as the visitors beat Orissa by an innings and ten runs at Cuttack. Tyagi, who took 6 for 46 in the first innings, picked up 4 for 46 on the third day, after UP posted 448, to rout Orissa for 222.
After Piyush Chawla's 69 helped extend UP's overnight lead, Tyagi nipped out two early wickets to leave Orissa 15 for 3. Chawla himself spun out three wickets, and the writing was on the wall. Allrounder Pinninti Jayachandra hit his second half-century of the match, and wicketkeeper Halhadar Das 71, but with no other support Orissa succumbed in the third session.

Northerns routed Free State by an innings and 91 runs at the LC de Villiers Oval, the game all but decided on the first morning as Pretoria were skittled out for 98 after being stuck in on a green track.
Poor batting was also behind Zimbabwe Provinces' 210-run defeat by Easterns at Bulawayo as they were bowled out for 81 and 130.

Karnataka edge ahead with Pawan and Dravid fifties

Karnataka dominated the third day against Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium, ending with a 53-run lead with eight wickets remaining in their second innings

Karnataka batted their way out of trouble and towards a position of strength on a track that got progressively slow, wiping out the 142-run first-innings deficit and ending the third day with a 53-run lead against Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium. The batting was propelled by KB Pawan and Rahul Dravid, who scored 76 and 77 and put on an unbroken 126-run partnership, after Vinay Kumar grabbed three quick wickets to wrap up Mumbai's innings in the morning.
Only four wickets fell on the day as Karnataka made slow progress - barring the first ten overs - at 2.53 runs per over. The intent, it seemed, was to first avoid defeat before thinking about the possibility of a win. They might up the ante tomorrow, declare with 200 ahead and leave around 50 overs for Anil Kumble and Sunil Joshi to come into play on a fourth-day track.

India ease to five-wicket win

India had the best of Pakistan in a lacklustre contest on a slightly demanding pitch, chasing down the target of 240 with five wickets to spare

India had the best of Pakistan in a lacklustre contest on a slightly demanding pitch, restricting them to 239 and then knocking off the runs through a string of contributions from the top order. It was not the most spectacular cricket, but it was sensible from India and perhaps a touch too circumspect from Pakistan, whose batsmen did not do enough, and whose bowlers were committed and disciplined but rarely penetrative.
When Shoaib Malik won the toss and chose to bat it appeared to be a sound decision, given that the pitch was dry, on the slower side, and threatened to break up in the second half. And when Salman Butt and Kamran Akmal got off to a breezy start, it appeared that India would have their work cut out. Akmal square drove crisply for boundaries when he was offered width and Butt used his wrists to guide the ball into gaps with excellent timing.

The Haryana-Goa match in Margao was set for an exciting fight for a first-innings lead after a four-wicket haul from left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati left the visitors at 205 for 7 at the end of the second day, 66 short of Goa's total. Jakati, who also scored a valuable 25 with the bat, dismissed all four Haryana batsmen who had got starts, including half-centurion Sumeet Sharma and Sachin Rana (44) within 26 runs of each other.

Suresh Raina hit a smashing double-century to put Uttar Pradesh in a commanding situation against Orissa in Cuttack. Raina's 203 came off only 217 balls and featured 27 fours and two sixes - 120 runs in boundaries. Raina's score was just 13 less than Orissa's total and took 167 fewer deliveries. This was his first first-class double-century, beating his previous best of 127.
Raina had come in to bat when UP were struggling at 35 for 3 and left them at 360 for 7. He was supported well by Shivakant Shukla, Ravikant Shukla and wicketkeeper Amir Khan. UP were not done, though, as Piyush Chawla made Orissa suffer further with an unbeaten 59 off 62 balls.

New Zealand's preparations for the two-Test series suffered a major blow when they went down by 85 runs against South Africa A in Potchefstroom. Requiring another 128 runs to win with four wickets in hand, the New Zealanders fell short on the final day of the tour game
Resuming at 230 for 6, much of their chances of victory rested on the overnight pair of Ross Taylor - who started the day on 79 - and Daniel Vettori. However, Friedel de Wet struck in the fifth over of the morning, removing Taylor - caught at gully by Boeta Dippenaar - for 86.

Kenya knocked off the final 79 runs to beat Bermuda in their Intercontinental Cup match at the Nairobi Gymkhana, easing to an eight-wicket win.
Maurice Ouma brought up a slick fifty from 49 balls, but he couldn't replicate the blistering strokeplay of yesterday afternoon, scooping Malachi Jones straight to mid-off for 63.
But David Obuya, the slower of the two yesterday, opened his shoulders - clubbing Jones over long-on before dispatching Rodney Trott over the same boundary for six. Trott got his man, however, when Obuya stepped to the leg-side and was beaten by a quicker delivery. Obuya's namesake, Collins, together with Tony Suji knocked off the required runs with the minimum of fuss to inflict yet another defeat on Bermuda.

Brad Haddin's highest one-day score was not enough for New South Wales to steal a win after Daniel Marsh's 106 set up Tasmania's 50-run victory. Marsh had plenty of batting support but Haddin's 138 not out was a solo effort as he tried to rein in a ballooning required run-rate after the top order struggled in chasing 326.
Haddin played some fiercely powerful straight drives in his 116-ball innings and cleared the ropes twice but Nathan Wegman's 4 for 45 and a tight opening spell from Brett Geeves (2 for 27) made the task too difficult. Wegman, the fast bowler who was making his debut aged 30, removed Grant Lambert for 38 and Simon Katich (0) in consecutive balls to have the Blues at 4 for 72.

Naik puts Mumbai in front

On a rollercoaster second day at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai began promisingly, allowed their position to slip slightly, but regrouped to finish 107 runs ahead at the close of play

On a rollercoaster second day at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai began promisingly, allowed their position to slip slightly against a spirited Karnakata, but regrouped to finish 107 runs ahead with three wickets in hand at close of play. The hosts dominated the first session, thanks to a 110-run opening stand between Wasim Jaffer and Sahil Kukreja, only to stumble as Karnataka grabbed five quick wickets in the second session to force their way back into the game. But a composed 78 from Prashant Naik on his Ranji Trophy debut allowed Mumbai to soak up the pressure and reach a healthy 302 for 7 by stumps.
Karnataka had thrown away the advantage of winning the toss on the opening day, but they would have been confident of fighting back through Anil Kumble and Sunil Joshi on a pitch which was offering assistance to spinners. Kumble, though, was a huge disappointment, taking just one wicket in 22 overs and going at nearly four runs per over. Joshi managed three scalps with his left-arm spin, but the effectiveness with which Mumbai thwarted Kumble meant half their battle had been won.
