Dale Steyn picked up Test-best figures of 10 for 93 to condemn New Zealand to a huge 358-run defeat in the first Test at the Wanderers. South Africa completely obliterated a feeble New Zealand batting lineup and, with the injuries they have suffered in the past 24 hours, it's hard to see how New Zealand can recover in time for the second Test on Friday.
It was South Africa's largest margin of victory (by runs), beating the 356-run win over England at Lord's in 1994. Back then it was Allan Donald who spearheaded their victory; today it was another young fast bowler, Steyn, who tore in relentlessly. New Zealand offered scant resistance, folding midway through the second session on the fourth day.

Queensland are on the brink of defeat after being on the receiving end of an extraordinary day of big hitting when Luke Ronchi smashed a 51-ball century. It was one of three hundreds for Western Australia, who charged to a 337-run lead before declaring on 5 for 565.
Shaun Marsh and Luke Pomersbach also piled in with centuries, sharing a 268-run partnership for the fourth wicket to cement a stronghold. Trouble continued for the Bulls when they slipped to 4 for 77 before stumps and were still 260 behind.

Two former Tasmania players now with Victoria put their old state in a tricky situation on the third day at the MCG. Tasmania will enter the final day 44 behind, with four wickets down after Matthew Wade made 95 and Gerard Denton contributed with the bat, and then with two wickets.
The batsmen's efforts drove Victoria to 408 and a lead of 173 before Denton and Shane Harwood joined forces, each grabbing two victims to leave Tasmania in some difficulty heading into Monday. Dan Marsh was on 31 at the close with Luke Butterworth on 17 as they began to rebuild for the Tigers, who reached 4 for 129.

A battling rearguard from South Australia's batsmen forced the match into the fourth day and gave them some hope, albeit only a flicker, against New South Wales in Adelaide. The home side reached 9 for 277 by stumps, and will take a lead of 144 into Monday.
It is unlikely to be enough, but their second-innings fight will give them some confidence following their first-innings collapse. Callum Ferguson made another composed fifty and then Andy Delmont continued to contribute in his first season with a mature 40. Ryan Harris (33 not out) combined with Mark Cleary (13 not out) to further the fight and the pair has so far added 27 for the final wicket

Yuvraj's all-round show powers India to series lead

India clinched the Kanpur ODI by 46 runs to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match ODI series

Led by Yuvraj Singh with bat, ball and in the field, India repelled a determined push from Salman Butt to pull off an ultimately comfortable 46-run win at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. Butt's fourth ODI hundred intermittently threatened India's 294 but it was built without solid support and ultimately wasn't enough to prevent them taking a 2-1 series lead.
Yuvraj foiled Pakistan at key moments, first with an intelligent, elegant 77, then with a shining run out amid a gloomy fielding performance and finally with a vital wicket. The interventions were necessary for when Pakistan began the chase, their target appeared a stroll.

Michael Vandort gave Australia's new-look attack its first real examination, forcing the players to work a full five-day week with his resilient 82 before he became Stuart MacGill's 200th Test wicket. Australia had set out to wrap up the first Test within four days but Vandort, regular rain breaks and bad light denied them a free Monday in Brisbane.
When the umpires offered Sri Lanka the light the visitors had reached 5 for 218 with Chamara Silva on 5 and Prasanna Jayawardene yet to score. However Australia were still well on the way to victory - weather permitting - as Sri Lanka trailed by 122 runs in their follow on.

UAE fought back brilliantly on the third day against Bermuda, with Arshad Ali cracking 185, his highest first-class score. At stumps, UAE led by 241.
Arshad and Naeemuddin Aslam, his overnight partner, put on 133 for the second wicket before he was run out. Kashif Khan departed to Kevin Hurdle soon after, but from them on it was UAE's day.
Arshad and Saqib Ali made Bermuda's bowlers toil with a gutsy fourth-wicket stand of 155, with Arshad dominating the attack - cracking 22 fours in his hundred. He was bowled by Malachi Jones for 185, only his second hundred.

Kiwis on the ropes after Kallis' 186

New Zealand are facing a crushing defeat in the first Test against South Africa at the Wanderers, after slipping to 57 for 3

New Zealand are facing a crushing defeat in the first Test against South Africa at the Wanderers. After watching Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla put on 330, New Zealand then lost early wickets to leave them limping - literally, in three cases - at 57 for 3. What an introduction to Test match captaincy it has been for Daniel Vettori.
It's hard to imagine how New Zealand could have endured a worse day than they did. To compound their misery, they have injuries affecting four of their players. Stephen Fleming looked reasonably comfortable when he batted late in the evening, but Michael Papps was stuck in the pavilion with a stomach upset, joining Shane Bond (abdomen) and Jacob Oram (hamstring). If either bowler fails to make it for the second Test, New Zealand will struggle to compete.

Shaun Marsh guided Western Australia to the brink of a first-innings lead after Mathew Inness pillaged Queensland's highly-regarded lower order to finish with 5 for 38. Marsh had 71 at stumps with Luke Pomersbach on 52 as the Warriors closed the day at 3 for 227, one run short of Queensland's total.
The Bulls began the day in a strong position at 5 for 220 with Jimmy Maher on 111. Ashley Noffke, who is fifth on this season's Pura Cup run tally, was on 34 and they also had Andy Bichel padded up fresh from his 125 against the touring Sri Lankans.

Simon Katich continued to pile on the runs in his productive Pura Cup season, scoring his second consecutive century as New South Wales cruised to a 131-run lead in Adelaide. At stumps South Australia had reduced the margin to 107, reaching 0 for 24 with Matthew Elliott on 17 and Shane Deitz on 7.
Katich's name would have been pencilled in high on the national selectors' list of players to monitor following his magnificent 306 in the last match and some highlighting and underlining might be added after his latest effort. He came in at 3 for 86 and while several of his partners failed to capitalise on their starts, he stayed for 182 balls and registered 117.
