It was an inauspicious first-class debut for Guyana quick Colin Stuart when, against Leeward Islands in the Red Stripe Cup of 1994-95, the 21-year-old returned 0 for 42 in an innings defeat for his team. There was nothing to mark him out as special, though, and it took him till his 32nd first-class match, in September 2000, to finally do something impressive: 4 for 42 and 4 for 50 for West Indies A against South Africa A in a four-day game in Kingstown. There was another four-for in the next game, and, suddenly, he was touring Australia to play Test cricket.
Six Tests came for Stuart in the space of a year between December 2000 and November 2001, during which time he also played five ODIs. He took 20 Test wickets at 31.40 and eight ODI wickets 25.62. But he never quite established himself in the West Indies side, and his first-class career came to an end after the 2002-03 season.
Stuart, however, remains part of one of cricket's great bits of trivia, for being one of three bowlers who had to combine forces to finish an over in a Test match. This was in the second Test between Sri Lanka and West Indies in Kandy in November 2001. Mervyn Dillon bowled the first two balls of the fifth over, but had to leave the field with an illness. Enter Stuart. And two of his first three deliveries were head-high full-tosses. So he was out of the attack for the rest of the innings, leaving Chris Gayle to finish the over. Stuart's figures for the first innings read: 0.1-0-2-0. In the second innings, he returned 8-1-21-0. He never played for West Indies again.
