Hugh Page was a fast bowler who made an early impression but whose career ultimately fizzled out. In 1984-85 and 1985-86 he was particularly successful with 50 and 46 wickets, being named one of the South African Cricket Annual Cricketers of the Year in 1985. He struggled in 1986-87, although he was signed as one of Essex's overseas players in 1987 but he failed to come to terms with English conditions as battled with a no-balling problem. Two more moderate seasons followed, after which he failed to hold down a regular place in first-class cricket although he did become more effective in one-day cricket. He subsequently went on to be a national selector.
