Rob Jones, in only his third-first class match, became the youngest Lancashire batsman since Cyril Washbrook in 1935 to carry his bat for 106 not out in 2016 against a Middlesex side that would emerge from the season as champions.

Jones, a 20-year-old who was playing minor counties cricket for Cheshire earlier in the season, defied a scoreboard that read, at one time 6 for 4 in producing almost seven hours of stout defence. He lofted offspinner Ollie Rayner for six over long on to reach three figures, a feat followed by a prolonged and emotional celebration befitting a young batsman who was so proud to play for Lancashire that he was given to walking around the dressing room in his cap.
