Ronald Aspinall, who died during 1999 aged 81, was a useful batsman and good right-arm fast-medium bowler who played 36 matches as a professional for Yorkshire between 1946 and 1950. In a career plagued with injuries, he scored 763 runs, averaging 19.07, and took 131 wickets at 20.38. His form was mixed but he enjoyed some fine performances. In 1947 at Northampton he obtained his best innings and match figures of 8 for 42 and 14 for 65, and in 1948 he did well against the Australians, counting Don Bradman amongst his victims. Then in May 1949 he was top of the national averages when a heel injury put him out for the season, and further injury in 1950 saw his premature retirement. After giving up the first-class game Aspinall played for Durham, then a Minor County, for seven seasons and from 1960 to 1981 he was a respected first-class umpire. He had a varied league career in Yorkshire and the Northeast and for a time was coach at St Peter's, York.
