Full Name

Sam Wright

Sheffield born, Sam Wright was brought to the USA in his twenties in 1837 as a groundsman for St George's CC and he fulfilled that role for 32 years. In that time he laid out three grounds for the club, including the one which hosted the first international between USA and Canada in 1844 (in which Wright also played). A middle-order batsman, he took part in the first seven such internationals, and in 1859 twice played against George Parr's touring side. His sons - Harry and George - were both cricketers - they were good enough to represent USA - who became baseball professionals, while his grandson, Beals Wright, was a leading tennis player who won a gold medal at the 1904 Olympics.
