Hard-hitting middle-order batsman Wayne Wiblin finished his career with Border in 2001-02, a season in which he missed a number of games after suffering a serious wrist injury. There was a huge shock when, in mid 2002, the Border Cricket Board's president, Ray Mali, announced that Wiblin had been appointed as coach of the Border senior team for 2002-03. At that stage he had only coached at schoolboy level, but Mali was positive that Wiblin's experience would pull him through. Wiblin held the position for two seasons with reasonable success, before, with the advent of the six franchises, making way for Mickey Arthur in April, 2004. (Peter Martin)
