Hashim Amla's greatest hits
Replacing a 'mentally tired' Herschelle Gibbs against New Zealand in 2006, Amla made 149, his maiden Test century, steering South Africa past the follow-on mark in Cape Town•Touchline Photo
Amla remains the fastest - in terms of innings - to each of the 1000-run landmarks from 2000 to 7000 in ODIs. One of his most significant contributions in the format came in a two-run win over Pakistan, in 2010, when he scored 52.19% of South Africa's total - 119 out of his team's 228•Associated Press
Captaining his side, Amla spent more than eight hours blunting the Sri Lankan threat in Colombo with a 382-ball 139. The match-saving innings sealed South Africa's first-ever Test series win in the country in 21 years•AFP
Amla's 28th - and last - Test hundred came in the home series against Bangladesh in 2017. He bows out of international cricket as one of only two batsmen to score 8000-plus runs at an average of over 45 in both Tests and ODIs•AFP
The year of Amla, by a distance: In 2010, he was the only batsman to top 1000 runs in both Tests and ODIs, scoring 10 international hundreds - five each in Tests and ODIs•Getty Images
A trailblazer: No South African other than Amla has made a Test triple-hundred. During his 311 against England at The Oval, he put on 377 with Jacques Kallis, and laid the foundations for an innings win at The Oval•Getty Images
Amla displaced AB de Villiers in the South Africa XI for the 2016 series-deciding T20I against Australia at home and quickly allayed fears that his inclusion would mean a slow start. He hammered a career-best 97 not out but couldn't help his side avert a loss•Getty Images
The swansong: Amla's last international match came against Sri Lanka at the 2019 World Cup. South Africa were already out of the reckoning for the semi-finals, but he found some cheer on the personal front, signing off with an unbeaten 80 in a nine-wicket win•Getty Images
His series-winning 196 against Australia in Perth in December 2012 won him the Player-of-the Match Award. It also contributed to Amla becoming the No. 1-ranked Test batsman in the world in 2013•Getty Images
During the 2017 Champions Trophy, Amla became the first South Africa batsman to score 25 ODI hundreds. He reached the landmark with 103 against Sri Lanka at The Oval•Getty Images
