Born in Lambeth, George Edwards advanced through the Surrey youth system, making his first-class debut against Cambridge MCCU at the age of 18. Though he had few opportunities given the depth of Surrey's pace-bowling stocks, he impressed observers with his ability to generate pace and bounce, and was selected for the England Potential Players Bowling Camp in February 2013. Later that year he bowled a hostile spell to Shivnarine Chanderpaul, eventually claiming his wicket lbw, but it proved to be his last first-class game for Surrey before his release at the end of 2014.

Ashley Giles recognised his raw talent and swiftly made Edwards his first signing as Lancashire's new director of cricket. He did figuyre in Lancashire's victorious side in the 2015 NatWest Blast final, but Lancashire's faith was not rewarded and, after using him as a T20 specialist in 2016, he was released at the end of the season.
