A slightly built man, Richmond Mutumbami is an aggressive middle-order wicketkeeper-batsman who made his first-class debut as 17-year-old. He struggled in his first few seasons but began to find his feet as the franchise system developed and he became a regular for the Southern Rocks.
His average crept over 30 in the 2010-11 summer but it was only two years later that he really made his mark. Mutumbami was the highest run-scorer in the 2012-13 Logan Cup season. His 686 runs at an average of 49 was headlined by 150 against the Mountaineers but was not enough to earn him a trip to the West Indies.
He was, however, included in their squad to face Bangladesh in the home series in April 2013. His Test debut came as a result of his own good form and an injury to Regis Chakabva and he was installed to bat at No.6. He was tidy behind the stumps but unsuccessful with the bat. His second match brought greater rewards as he managed an attacking 42.
