Right-hand bat Sohail Akhtar made a modest career as an opener and lower-middle-order batter with Lahore Qalandars in the PSL, and on a smaller scale in first-class cricket for Abbottabad and FATA in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

He made his T20 debut late in 2012, and played his maiden first-class game in January of the following year. In his second first-class season, 2014-15, he made scores of 77 and 94 in back-to-back games in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Silver League. His first T20 hundred, off 56 balls, came in an Abu Dhabi T20 Trophy game against Yorkshire in October 2018. In the PSL, he produced twin scores of 68 in successive games against Karachi Kings in March 2020.
