As it happened: Gujarat Titans vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, IPL 2022, Mumbai

T Natarajan bowls a lovely 19th over - except for a low full toss that Rahul Tewatia smashes for a six. Man, bowling to him leaves very little margin for error. That swing into the leg side just seems so powerful. So potent.

Titans need 22 off six balls. And Jansen, who has been called in to do the job, leaks six first ball. It's that bent knee slog sweep over the leg side again. Titans need 16 off 5! THEY'VE DONE IT! THEY'VE DONE IT AGAIN! GUJARAT TITANS JUST WILL NOT BE DENIED. RAHUL TEWATIA JUST WILL NOT BE DENIED RASHID KHAN JUST WILL NOT BE DENIED.

Rashid Khan SMASH!

He did it to CSK.
Can he do it to Sunrisers too?
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is feeling the pinch.
Rashid went for 45 in his four overs today. His third most expensive spell in the IPL.
And he's come out looking to give back just as good.
There's even a helicopter shot for six. And Rashid doesn't even look up. He just keeps staring at the ground, at the exact spot where his whirling bat made contact with Bhuvneshwar's ball and sent it soaring into the night sky.
Titans need 35 off 12 balls

Malik 5 for 25!

Suddenly this whole game seems to be about one single person.
He's 22 years old. He bowls 150 kph. And he's extremely prejudiced against those three sticks of wood standing harmlessly behind the batter, minding their own business.
David Miller is castled by a 148 kph length ball that was more a shot from a cannon from around the wicket.
Then it's Abhinav Manohar's turn. It's fast. It's full. And if that's not enough. It seams away after pitching.
The batter is paralysed at the crease. That's what pace does. It makes you seize up. It puts the fear back in you. And eventually it just beats you. Truly exhilarating stuff.

Umran Malik 152.8 kph

And it's a yorker too.
The kind that tails in.
The kind that lives in memory loooooooooong after it does its job and rattles the batter's stumps.
Wriddhiman Saha has been sublime tonight. But even he is not equipped to deal with this thunderbolt. Out for 68 off 38.
Titans aren't quite ready to throw in the towel though. Rahul Tewatia ramps Malik for four in the same over that brought the breakthrough.
This game is something else.

Saha has 50!

Meanwhile, Wriddhiman Saha has 50 off 28 balls. Excellent manipulator of the field, especially during the restrictions. He's not afraid of high pace and he is among India's very best against spin bowling. His footwork against Washington Sundar is really something to behold. Keeps finding ways to go right forward, or right back, which means two things. A) He's picking the ball out the hand and b) he's picking the length superbly early.
Titans 96 for 2; Saha 52(30) and Miller 6(6). They need 100 runs in 54 balls. Our forecaster gives them a 20.14% chance of victory.

Malik nails Hardik!

What a high octane battle. And it was only four balls!
Neither man was taking a backwards step.
Hardik especially seemed like he simply would not be intimidated. Every shot he attempted - after getting hit on the shoulder - by Malik was an attacking one.
Ball number three of this head-to-head and Hardik brings out the helicopter. Malik is looking for the blockhole. He doesn't get it. Hardik gets under the ball and wrist-powers it almost straight into mid-on's hands. It bounces short of the fielder and goes for four.
Undeterred, Malik runs in again. Harder. Faster. Hungrier. And then he delivers at 145 kph short ball. The thing itself doesn't rise all that high. Maybe up to his waist. But it's seriously quick. It catches Hardik midway through the shot.
Very few can catch Hardik midway through his shot. His power game is built on ferociously quick hands.
But here they aren't quick enough. The ball pings off the toe end of the bat. Goes straight up and ends up caught at deep (and very fine) third man.
Phew. What a rush!

Umran strikes!

Four balls into his spell, Umran Malik produces the wicket that Sunrisers were getting desperate for.
Length ball. 144 kph. Skidding through under Shubman Gill's bat even as he tried to make room to carve it over the off side.
The plan was sound, but the lack of bounce, did him in.
Titans 69 for 1 in the eighth over. They need 127 runs in 74 balls with ESPNcricinfo's forecaster giving them a 26% chance of victory.
Umran greets the Titans captain with a 145 kph bouncer. And it soars past Hardik's bat, coming up to defend, and thuds into his right shoulder. Massive pace. Massive bounce. Massive battle.
The next one is 151 kph. Umran is pumped. But he is facing an batting phenom. This man used to have a problem against high pace. Then he went back and worked on his backfoot game. His cuts. His pulls. His punches. One of those comes out to greet this 151 kph thunder bolt and sends it right back past the bowler for four past mid-off.
GAME ON!

The mismatch

Gujarat Titans' top three: average 21.19 (second worst), strike rate 119.62 (worst)in IPL 2022
Sunrisers Hyderabad: bowling average 20.69 (best) and economy rate 7.99 (best) in IPL 2022
This is a mismatch.
But so far Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha are holding their own. Saha, btw, has a strike rate of 132 in the powerplay. That puts him in the top ten among batters who have faced at least 500 balls in this phase of an IPL innings. Dude's rubbing shoulders with Sehwag, Gilchrist, Gayle, Warner and more.

And Shashank Singh took him apart. Gujarat Titans will now have to pull off the second highest chase against Sunrisers Hyderabad to win this game.
Oops scratch that, Yash Dayal has him caught off for 56 off 40 with a slower ball. He's constantly been stymied by the slower ball this innings. According to ESPNcricinfo's logs, he's faced six of them tonight and scored only 10.
Sunrisers 161 for 5 in 18. overs; Sundar 3 (3)

Bossing Rashid Khan

3 Rashid Khan finished 4-0-45-0. That makes it the third most expensive spell of his IPL career.
Rashid to Abhishek: 34 runs, 115 balls, three sixes, one four Rashid to everybody else (which in this game was just Markram): 11 runs, nine balls, no sixes, one four
Throughout the game, it looked like the left-hander was picking him out of the hand. Amazing.
Sunrisers are 140 for 2 in 15 overs. Abhishek is 65 off 41 and Markram is 41 off 31.
They have the platform. Now it's time to all-out attack.
Oops. They've lost Abhishek. First ball into the last five overs, Joseph clatters his stumps.
In comes Nicholas Pooran. Still advantage Sunrisers.

Abhishek 33-ball fifty

Historically left-handers go at a strike rate of 109 against Rashid Khan in the IPL.
Abhishek Sharma though goes at 205. The youngster has just launched the world's best white-ball spinner for a second six over the leg side to bring up a 33-ball half-century
Having this pair in the middle is working a treat for Sunrisers because well, Abhishek (SR tonight 236) is walloping spin, so that negates Titans going after Markram (SR 115 this season) with spin. Meanwhile, Markram is walloping pace (SR 188 this season), so that negates Titans going after Abhishek (SR this match 115) with pace.

145, 150, 129, 143, 149, 142...
Those were Alzarri Joseph's speeds (kph) in the 11th over.
He's hitting high on the bat. He's a little like Jofra Archer really. Ridiculously easy action. Sensational pace on delivery.
But you remember that Aiden Markram loves pace, don't you? He's also sized Joseph up as a hit the deck bowler. That means he can set up on the back foot and monster the last ball for six over deep midwicket.
Glorious contest so far. Sunrisers 96 for 2 after 11 overs; Abhishek 37 (29) and Markram 25 (19)

Spotlight on Markram

115 Aiden Markram's strike rate against spin this season. He hits pace at 188.
Hardik seems to know this because he brings Rashid Khan on immediately after the powerplay, with the South African still to score his first run.
Sunrisers have a little more bulk in their middle order this season with both Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran in good form.
Their games don't end now as soon as David Warner is out. That coupled with their bowling attack makes them strong contenders for the playoffs. 76 for 2 after nine overs; Abhishek 34 (25) and Markram 10(11)

In praise of Shami

W
This is what the greats do.
It's not that they don't go for runs.
It's that they know how to recover from it.
Mohammed Shami is given a third over in the powerplay, coz well, Titans have Lockie Ferguson, Rashid Khan *and* Alzarri Joseph for the back end.
Rahul Tripathi takes him apart for a little bit, charging down the pitch to get the length he wants - full - so he can just hit through the line. Tripathi loves that length. He's made an IPL career out of being able to smash that length.
But after three crrrrrrunching boundaries, Shami figures out what he needs to do.
He lands one on juuuuuust back of a length - can't run down at that - with absolutely no room on offer - can't throw the bat at that. Tripathi is trapped. It's not full enough to drive. It's not short enough to cut. And worse, it pitches and skids into him, beating him for pace and pinning him lbw.
They needed DRS to confirm the wicket but Shami by then had left the field because it was the last ball of his third over. He won't be needed till the back end, or maybe just a bit before that. So the only people high-fiving him for the wicket are the support staff in the dugout. 3-0-29-2 #JobDone

On Abhishek Sharma

3 Abhishek Sharma, with 145 in 122 balls, is the third-highest run-getter in the powerplay in IPL 2022 (as of the fourth over of this game)
Tom Moody, earlier this season, produced a stirring defence of the young batter, saying people were too quick to judge him and that before this tournament was done he was going to produce a match-winning knock for them.
That kind of faith goes a long way in helping a young player just do what he does. Abhishek knows his team is behind him and even though he's lost his captain, this is a phase of the game where he thrives. Although that strike rate (119) could use a little bump.
Meanwhile, another batter who relishes playing in the powerplay has just got a life. Rashid Khan has dropped Rahul Tripathi. Sunrisers 30 for 1 in four overs.

Shami+new ball=fire

7 Wickets for Mohammed Shami in the powerplay, the best in IPL 2022. He has bowled 119 balls in this period and produced 37 false shots (as of the third over of this game).
The left-handed Abhishek Sharma found out all about this when not one but two back of a length deliveries that were angled into him suddenly straightened and zipped past his outside edge.
Mohammed Shami with that brand new ball is straight fire. And in his next over, he cuh-lean bowls Kane Williamson. Pitched up to lure him into the drive, then seaming in through the gate. Gorgeous stuff.
This was hyped as the showdown between the two best bowling teams of the IPL and it is certainly living up to the hype. Sunrisers 26 for 1 in 2.5 overs

Toss: Gujarat Titans bowl

So seven and done. Kane Williamson's streak of winning tosses ends tonight with the coin falling in favour of Gujarat Titans. Hardik Pandya has decided to bowl first. He says *he* may or may not bowl, thanks to the plethora of options available at his disposal (and maybe also coz he's a fairly valuable resource that has recently been banged up so there's a large amount of caution going into deciding his workloads).
Titans are unchanged, but Sunrisers have brought back Washington Sundar, the frontline spinner having recovered from his finger injury. J Suchith makes way.
Sunrisers Hyderabad 1 Kane Williamson (capt.), 2 Abhishek Sharma, 3 Rahul Tripathi, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Nicholas Pooran (wk), 6 Shashank Singh, 7 Washington Sundar, 8 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9 Marco Jansen, 10 Umran Malik, 11 T Natarajan
Gujarat Titans: 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 3 Hardik Pandya (capt), 4 David Miller, 5 Rahul Tewatia, 6 Abhinav Manohar, 7 Rashid Khan, 8 Alzarri Joseph, 9 Lockie Ferguson, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Yash Dayal

Umran Malik's IPL

Umran Malik has bowled 156 deliveries in the IPL this season. And 90.8% of them have been 140 kph or above
He is raw. He can leak runs. And he may not always work. But boy does he make the hair on the back of our neck stand on end.
If it's like that for us, imagine what the batter must be feeling.
Pace is the funnest thing in cricket. It makes even the very best look very silly. It has been a point of difference in cricket for centuries and if only because of that I kinda want Malik on that flight to the T20 World Cup in Australia.
I don't even care if he plays. Just being there in that environment, learning from the other internationals, trading stories about all the people's he's planted on their backsides... It'd put him on the fast track to that first India cap.

Welcome!

T20 is all about that little white ball and how far it can fly. But for about three hours (maybe four) lets close our eyes and picture a world where the balance of the game is tipped the other way, where that little white ball doesn't fly to all parts but instead homes in on those three little sticks on the ground, making them light up over and over and over.
Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad boast some of the best T20 bowlers in the world. And they'll each be up against batting line-ups that aren't the typical definition of powerhouses. This should be fun.
