Warwickshire, without a home championship win this season, are unlikely to achieve their elusive victory in a rain ruined game with Worcestershire at Edgbaston.
There was an indication of what was in store when only three runs came off the first six overs of the day although opener Mark Wagh went on to record a personal best score of 130.
The game was also a personal milestone for Dominic Ostler 88. When he had scored 85 he sent up 1000 for the season for the first time since 1994.
Wagh was very restrained but did manage a couple of boundaries off Stuart Lampitt before he was trapped lbw by Glenn McGrath for an impressive 130.
This is only his seventh first team game in two seasons and it is difficult to understand why a player of such talent should suffer such a restriction.
Following his opening stand of 166 with Michael Powell he was a key figure in the second wicket partnership of 73 with Dominic Ostler.
McGrath then stepped in to collect his third wicket of the day when Vikram Solanki took a catch at second slip to send back David Hemp with the score 263.
Ostler and Anurag Singh remained together when rain halted the morning session 45 minutes early.
No play was possible in the afternoon session but play resumed after the loss of 58 overs leaving 26 to be played of which 24 were completed.
Worcestershire took the new ball shortly after Ostler, who is in his benefit season, sent up his half century with a boundary from a cover drive off McGrath.
Another Ostler four, this time of Chris Liptrot, took Warwickshire past the 300 mark.
The fourth wicket put on 103 before Ostler was run out going for a second run.
Warwickshire finished the day on 367-5 - a lead of 104. Singh was 42 not out.
