Griffith delivers convincing Tasmania victory

Adam Griffith led Tasmania's upset victory over Victoria, who still lead the competition despite the 120-run loss, with five wickets at the Junction Oval. The Bushrangers began the final day needing 267 for victory, but their worrying position of 4 for 152 got worse with the loss of the overnight batsmen Nick Jewell and Cameron White before lunch. Jewell fell to Griffith after adding only two runs and White slipped against Brett Geeves on 73.

Shane Warne and Adam Crosthwaite delayed the end with a 90-run stand, and Warne was comfortable in making 62 until he was run-out trying to take a second on the arm of Griffith. Crosthwaite did not want the extra run and Griffith's throw was relayed to the bowler's end for an easy dismissal.

Crosthwaite departed for 41 to Ben Hilfenhaus as Griffith picked up Gerard Denton and Shane Harwood to seal the win in the second session. His figures of 5 for 79 earned his seventh first-class five-wicket haul and pushed Tasmania to 14 points. South Australia and Queensland will have a chance to overtake Victoria, who remain on 24, when they play at the Gabba from Sunday.

"If you look at the opportunity of another six points we could have skipped clear a bit in this game, so that's the most disappointing thing," White told AAP. "We didn't play well in this game and really didn't deserve to win, and we have to find a way to win at this ground."
