Tasmania took control by dropping Queensland to 9 for 211 at stumps on a rain-reduced opening day at Bellerive Oval. The Bulls, who are second, were bruised by a varied and potent attack led by Ben Hilfenhaus, who took two wickets and forced Lee Carseldine to retire hurt.
Carseldine suffered a stringing blow on the ribs and left the field, but returned later in the day, adding two runs before slipping against Luke Butterworth on 40. While Hilfenhaus caused pain at the top of the order with his 2 for 25 from 17 overs, Butterworth pushed through the middle to claim 3 for 43. The burst ended any chance of Queensland registering a big total and they will have to hope their bowlers are as effective on a supportive surface.
Queensland's innings started badly when Ryan Broad was run-out trying to get off the mark with a push to cover. Martin Love nicked Hilfenhaus to first slip on 16 before Nick Kruger (41) and Clinton Perren (34) staged a small recovery. However, Kruger became the maiden victim of the debutant James Faulkner and no batsman was able to negotiate the situation for long enough to make a significant contribution.
