a wide ball and fantasy cricket players all over the world are going "noooo". Not New Zealand. Length ball fired down leg side gives them the win
New Zealand vs West Indies, 1st ODI at Whangarei, Dec 20 2017 - Ball by Ball Commentary
New Zealand won by 5 wickets (with 24 balls remaining)
6:54pm That's all from our coverage today. We'll see you soon for the second ODI. On behalf of Sreshth and Thilak - a good night to you all.
Kane Williamson: A few things to improve on but overall it was good. Bowlers did well but they dug in and managed to put up a score that could be tricky. But credit to our batsmen who came out and took the momentum. Both those guys, particularly Doug has played for a few years and it's good to have him back. George has been doing well in the domestic circuit and he's showing his wares now. Todd Astle was brilliant as well. It's going be a slightly different surface in Centurion, we have to be smart to adapt. [About his break] Don't really know what do! A couple of days off. It will be tough seeing the boys on the TV.
Jason Holder: Yeah tough start. We didn't think we got enough runs. One or two batsmen put up scores but we never really gathered momentum. We got to be a lot better with the bat. It hampered us in the end because we had to lay platforms again and again.
Bracewell, Man of the Match: Yeah it was nice to get Chris [Gayle] first delivery. It's been a bit of a tough road back but done a lot of work in the winter rehabing. It's still a bit niggly just gotta keep managing it. It's good to be back with these bunch of boys.
6:54pm A well crafted chase from New Zealand. Started off in stunning fashion, with Munro leading the way as Worker saw himself in. A superb century stand for the opening wicket that had done more than half the job. They knocked the air out of West Indies early and they couldn't quite recover. They managed to take five wickets and got into the thin lower order New Zealand have today, but Taylor was there till the end and ensured there weren't too many runs to get. A memorable debut for Astle, three wickets and that little cameo at the end. A happy return to international cricket for Doug Bracewell, whose four wickets set New Zealand up for a modest chase.
One run to win. One run for Taylor to get his fifty.
full at middle stump, leans in and clips it wide of mid-on
floors him as he follows him down leg side with a bouncer. Nicely directed and he has to bring out his best Matrix impression to sway away from this. Falls down in the process
low full toss on the pads, follows it with his hands and flicks it to deep square's left
short ball outside off, backs away and chops past wide gully to third man's right
full at off stump, clears the front leg to open up the off side. But he finds extra cover
short ball at middle stump, keeps the pull down, gets it to deep square's left
nicely timed. Clips this length ball off his pads and to deep square's left
swings through the line to hammer this past the non-striker. First boundary in ODIs, and it's stylish. Drags this length ball from outside off and keeps his shape as he punches it to beat mid-on
full at leg stump, driven to long-on
full and into the pads, clipped to deep square
good length at off stump, driven on the up to mid-off. Bang off the toe-end of the bat
good length at middle stump, pushed to long-on on the up
Rovman Powell has the ball
Neil: "Taylor is closing in on a few milestones that hopefully he will pass by the end of the summer. He's just over 300 runs away from 7,000 ODI runs, and 400 runs away from moving ahead of Nathan Astle into second on the all-time list of most ODI runs for New Zealand."
short one at middle stump, leaps off the floor to defend into the leg side
back of a length at off stump, defended off the back foot
back of a length outside off, toe-ends it as he looks to punch through the off side
short ball in the corridor, defended to point off the back foot
caught behind! No room to play the cut but he takes it on. Holder bowls in the channel from around the wicket, and rolls his fingers on this one. Gets some grip and lift, and that's enough to take the edge as Nicholls goes after it
good length outside off, driven on the up to extra cover
short and into the chest, pulled uppishly towards deep square
