Nathan Hauritz was the pick of the Australian bowlers, taking 3 for 37 to help keep New Zealand down to a gettable 200. Hauritz had a hand in dismissing two set batsmen who were attempting to lead a New Zealand recovery after the early loss of Brendon McCullum. Aaron Redmond (26) and Martin Guptill (40) had added 61 for the second wicket, but Hauritz had the former stumped in the 19th over to break the stand. Guptill was the most fluent among the New Zealand batsmen, and when he scooped a catch back to Hauritz in the 23rd over, Australia held a firm advantage.
After being reduced to 94 for 5, Neil Broom and James Franklin set about taking New Zealand to a position of respectability. The pair had added 65 for the sixth wicket but a huge misunderstanding in the 41st over pegged New Zealand back. Broom, after knocking one to point, ran back to the crease only to turn back and see Franklin charging down for a single, he then attempted to complete the run but was too late as Michael Hussey had returned a throw to Shane Watson at the bowler's end, and he took off the bails to find Broom well short. New Zealand were around 40 runs short in the end, and that owed a lot to Broom's wicket.
Australia were rocked early in their chase, reduced to 6 for 2 when Shane Watson and Cameron White came together. The pair set off slowly, White was also lucky as he was dropped by Brendon McCullum. But after getting their eye in, they stepped up the pace and were harsh on anything bowled short or full. The boundaries kept coming, and so did the singles and twos to destroy any momentum New Zealand had gained. The pair added 128 for the third wicket, and set the foundation for a successful chase. White was dismissed for 62, Watson went on to score his second successive century to see Australia home and win them their second ICC Champions Trophy.
