The Zimbabwe Cricket Union (ZCU) president Peter Chingoka will
tomorrow seek an eighth mandate as Zimbabwe Cricket Union president at
its annual general meeting tomorrow, ZCU chief executive Dave
Ellman-Brown has said.
Ellman-Brown said that besides the current president, Chingoka, there
are no other nominees who have indicated their interest to run for the
post to lead the most organised and successful sporting discipline.
"At the moment what I can only confirm is that our president Chingoka
has indicated that he wants to seek re-election and maybe other
nominees might come during the day of the meeting tomorrow.
"Besides the president, other board members have also indicated to us
that they will be available to stand for re-election hence I expect no
dramatic activities tomorrow," said Ellman-Brown.
He said the cricket fraternity seemed to be behind the current
executive and board members who have run the union with diligence and
raised the Zimbabwean flag high.
Chingoka has held the position since 1992 when he took over from
Ellman-Brown who had successfully negotiated Zimbabwe's entry into the
elite Test club.
Ellman-Brown said high on the agenda tomorrow would be their financial
status. "I think this year's annual general meeting will focus more on
our financial statement since most of the board members seek
re-election. In fact as my first year as chief executive of the
cricket union comes to the end, I am greatly pleased with what
transpired last year. Therefore I expect positive things to be
discussed at the meeting," he said.
Besides financial issues and the elections, the new board will appoint
a new captain for the national team and a panel of selectors who might
be increased from the present number of four.
The new board of control is also mandated to appoint managers of the
teams and any other subordinates to lead and help the team.
"Personally I am delighted with the past year considering that our
performances were great and the way things were co-ordinated from the
same roof, not experiencing scattered voices but coached under one
roof," he said.
He added that of significance was winning the first Test in Pakistan
and also beating South Africa during the World Cup where Zimbabwe
qualified for the Super Six stage of the competition for the first
time.
"In fact we managed to beat a team South of the Limpopo that is South
Africa and it shows how great we are at this side," said Ellman-Brown
who has only headed the union for a year.
He said that after the meeting, ZCU would be focussing on the next
World Cup and tours coming up this year.
"We are very happy with our new sponsors and the support we got from
our supporters and our academy has started on a high note meaning to
say our future player base is quite good.
"All the provincial teams are well co-ordinated and things are running
smoothly, which I hope will continue to be the same this year," he
said.
