England cricket selectors have named a strong 12-member squad to
represent English first class counties select X1 in a one day limited
over match against the touring Sri Lanka 'A' to be played at the
Riverside Ground, Durham tomorrow.
Sussex's Chris Adams will captain the English First Class Counties X1
which include Darren Maddy (Leicestershire), Darren Stevens
(Leicestershire), Ben Smith (Leicestershire), Derek Kenway
(Hampshire), Vikram Solanki (Worcestershire), Paul Weekes (Middlesex),
Paul Nixon (Leicestershire), Paul Franks (Nottinghamshire), Stephen
Harmison (Durham), Alamgir Sheriyar (Worcestershire) and Melvyn Betts
(Durham).
The ECB announced that the squad does not include players from the
eight counties competing in the NatWest Trophy quarter-final ties on
the same day - Lancashire, Yorkshire, Glamorgan, Gloucestershire,
Somerset, Kent, Northamptonshire and Surrey. Cricketers from
Derbyshire too were not considered for selection as they will be
playing a one-day game against New Zealand on the same day.
Chairman of Selectors David Graveney was quoted as saying that the
match against Sri Lanka 'A' should prove a very useful exercise as it
will give them the chance to see how players cope for a select XI,
outside the environment of their counties.
