The Barbados Nation
Talented all-rounder Ryan Hinds will captain Barbados in the
1999 Nortel Under-19 West Indies Youth Tournament here from July
13 to August 6.
Hinds, the 18-year-old left-handed middle-order batsman and
left-arm spinner, who made his first-class debut in this year's
Busta Cup regional competition, is among six players retained
from last year.
The others are off-spinner Ryan Austin, opening batsman Jason
Haynes, left-arm wrist spinner Jedson Yarde, fast-bowling
all-rounder Callitos Lopez and lanky left-arm spinner Sulieman
Benn.
Stylish middle-order batsman Kurt Wilkinson, who played for the
West Indies Cricket Board's (WICB) Nortel Development team last
year, is among eight newcomers on the Barbados team.
Joining him are pace bowlers Marlon Franklyn and Antonio Thomas,
wicket-keeper Damien Maynard, burly opening batsman Jason
Parris, middle-order batsmen Rohan Nurse and Vonrick Nurse and
outstanding schoolboy all-rounder Dwayne Smith.
The selectors have named four reserves in Jason Bennett, Dale
Brathwaite, Kevin Marshall and Winfield Sobers while another
foursome, Jason Gilkes, Randy Graham, Ryan Layne and Ryan Nurse
have been recommended for consideration on the Nortel
Development team.
The Barbados Cricket Association (BCA), in a release yesterday,
said each participating territory is required to submit four
players for consideration on the Development team.
The final 14-member squad will be selected by a panel,
comprising youth selectors from each territory but the WICB is
to advise on the date for choosing the final squad.
As happened in 1998, Canada and a Nortel Development team will
be included in the eight-team tournament with matches played
over three days.
The BCA also noted that the selection criteria is based on
fitness, performance, ability and potential for future
development, discipline, attendance and punctuality during the
preparation programme.
The local association added that the preparation programme which
started in January will continue with weekly practice and
lecture sessions for the 22 players named.
The squad: Ryan Hinds (captain), Ryan Austin, Sulieman Benn,
Marlon Franklyn, Jason Haynes, Callitos Lopez, Damien Maynard, Rohan
Nurse, Vonrick Nurse, Jason Parris (vice captain), Dwayne Smith,
Antonio Thomas, Kurt Wilkinson, Jedson Yarde.
