advance to the final of the Grace Kennedy Sunlight Cup cricket
competition at Melbourne Park yesterday.
KC's 500 runs also erased the previous record of 495 runs in a
Sunlight Cup innings held by St. Jago and made in 1993 against St.
George's College.
KC did not declare on their overnight score of 421 for six and added
a further 79 runs for the loss of their remaining four wickets.
Andrew Richards, who was not out on nine overnight, went on to make
42 and Andrew Dennis, the other not out batsman, made 32. Andre' Rowe
was the pick of the bowlers for St. Jago with five for 79 off 23
overs and Calvin Walsh took four for 148 off 30 overs.
St. Jago found themselves with an impossible task of reaching the
mammoth total set by KC when they started to bat 31 minutes before
lunch. After an opening stand of 36 between Howard Edwards and Danza
Hyatt, they lost their first wicket when Hyatt was out for 20. Those
getting among the runs for St. Jago were Andrew Rowe (77), Raymore
Smith (34), Howard Edwards (26).
Leonard Walker took four for 33 off 8.3 overs, Isaacs two for 24 off
11 overs and Richards two for 63 off 17 overs.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Grant High and Waterford Comprehensive, with two
victories and a draw each, have set up a play-off in Group Two of the
Cup semi-finals which will be held tomorrow and Saturday at a venue
to be announced.
Jonathan Grant yesterday defeated Bridgeport High by six wickets
while Waterford completed a 96-run victory over St. Andrew Technical
(STATHS).
Jonathan Grant, resuming on their overnight 57 for one and chasing
194 for victory, posted 97 runs in yesterday's first session with
opening batsman Gerald Morgan falling one run short of a
well-deserved half century when he was caught by Craig Dawkins off
pacer Kurt Irving after posting 111 for the second wicket with
captain Tamar Lambert who played the sheet-anchor role.
David Harrison joined Lambert to add 52 runs before he went leg
before to Christopher Hopwood for seven.
Lambert played a captain's knock and scored his first Sunlight Cup
century of the season before he was bowled by Irving for his team's
top score of 101 and with Jonathan Grant needing only 18 more runs
for victory.
Irving was the best of the Bridgeport bowlers with two for 45 while
Hopwood and Dawkins ended with one for 34 and 44 respectively.
At Maxfield Park: Waterford 245 (Royan Smith 61); STATHS 149.
At Heroes Circle: Wolmer's defeated St. George's College by
five wickets. Scores: St. George's College 83; Wolmer's 87 for five.
