Jamaica: Shaw Park victorious
The Jamaica Gleaner
Solid batting by Carl Brissett, Derrick Henry and Delroy Morgan
guided Shaw Park Beach Hotel to a comfortable six-wicket win over
Boscobel Beach Hotel in the final of the Edwin Charley Black Label
Rum All-Island hotel cricket competition at the Kaiser Sports Club
yesterday.
Brissett struck 29, Henry contributed 28 and Morgan made 35 not out
as Shaw Park Beach reached 137 for four off 37.2 overs in reply to
Boscobel's meagre 136 all out off 35.4 overs.
Shaw Park however, got an early scare in their pursuit of victory,
when hard-hitting Howard Harris skied a Gareth Breese delivery to
long off to be caught by Valentine McKenzie for 22 at 40 for one.
Twenty runs later, Derrick Henry hit Kevin Murray to McKenzie on the
square-leg boundary to be out for 26 at 60 for two. But Brissett and
Morgan, who shared in a valuable 37-run partnership, ensured the St.
Ann-based hotel its first title of the 1998-99 hotel season. In the
process, Shaw Park denied Boscobel a triple crown after they had won
the John Issa St. Ann/St. Mary Hotel KO trophy and the Mateland
Walker Championship.
Earlier, Boscobel collapsed from 91 for two to be all out for 136
courtesy of an inspired spell of bowling by Bevon Brown who claimed
three for 19 and Delroy Morgan who snared 2-31.
Only opener Dervin Morand with a breezy 43 which included four fours
and two sixes provided any great resistance.
