KARACHI, Feb 28: Former captain Salim Malik and Ijaz Ahmed were on
Sunday left out of the Pakistan squad for the Asian Test Championship
match against Sri Lanka, beginning from March 4 at the Gaddafi
Stadium, Lahore.
Both Malik and Ijaz were among the 20 probables for the national
camp, which was named on Feb 26. The two senior batsmen, along with
fast bowler Waqar Younis (who was not even included in the list of
probables), were members of the team which recently toured India.
Chairman of the National Selection Committee, Wasim Bari, has
announced a 15-man squad which also includes the uncapped Imran
Nazir.
Imran, a hard-hitting right-handed opening batsman, has been picked
on the basis of his performance in the current domestic season and
the just concluded under-19 series against South Africa.
Among the other probables to be excluded are pace bowlers Mohammad
Akram and Shabbir Ahmed and the Quetta batsman Nasim Khan. Nasim was
preferred over several deserving candidates after notching a couple
of centuries this season in the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy Grade-II National
Championship matches.
The squad for the Asian Test against Sri Lanka is:
Wasim Akram (captain), Moin Khan (vice-captain), Saeed Anwar, Imran
Nazir, Wajahatullah Wasti, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Yousuf Youhana, Shahid
Afridi, Azhar Mahmood, Shoaib Akhtar, Arshad Khan, Mohammad Wasim,
Fazle Akbar and Shahid Nazir.
