Tony Marshall, president of the Barbados Cricket Association
(BCA), yesterday formally announced he would be standing for
re-election at the association's annual general meeting on
Thursday, July 29.
The announcement of his candidacy was contained in a Press
release from public relations firm JER Associates and follows
that of Sir Conrad Hunte last week.
Marshall, a former Barbados director of Barclay's Bank PLC, also
held senior management positions in New York, the United States,
Antigua and Belize. He is a past president of the Barbados
Jaycees and also had the opportunity of managing the West Indies
team during the tour by New Zealand.
He said his programme would continue to improve the quality of
cricket in Barbados and, by extension the West Indies, embracing
the combined elements of players, patrons, plane and technology.
Marshall cited the "sound financial results" of the association
during his three years of stewardship in addition to the breaking
of new ground in the areas of sponsorship, coaching,
infrastructural development at Kensington Oval and organisational
structure.
The BCA president said that in light of the increasingly
important role of business in the development of cricket, he had
sought to bring about an upgrading of the operations of the
association to "a business oriented ethos" in keeping with the
organisation's longstanding Mission Statement.
Marshall said the Government had demonstrated its confidence in
the association by providing substantial financial and other
support.
He expressed his appreciation to West Indian cricket icons, Sir
Garfield Sobers and Sir Everton Weekes in particular, as well as
several othercoaches, who had involved themselves voluntarily in
the challenging task of propelling the association's programme.
Similarly, the BCA also appreciated Government's initiative in
providing technical assistance to further assist a developmental
thrust.
Marshall is a director of the West Indies Cricket Board Inc. and
a member of the Executive Committee. He's also chairman of the
Human Resource Committee and a member of the Cricket Development
Committee.
