Martyn replaces Ponting in Test squad to New Zealand

The Australian selectors have named Western Warriors batsman Damien Martyn as the replacement for injured Tasmanian Ricky Ponting in the 14-man squad to play three Tests against New Zealand starting March 11

The Australian selectors have named Western Warriors batsman Damien Martyn as the replacement for injured Tasmanian Ricky Ponting in the 14-man squad to play three Tests against New Zealand starting March 11.
Martyn, 28, was added to the squad after Ponting failed a fitness test in Sydney on his injured ankle, which has also ruled him out of the three one-day internationals in South Africa in April.
Martyn, a regular member of Australia's all-conquering one-day side and veteran of 53 one-day internationals, last played a Test in the famous five-run loss to South Africa at the Sydney Cricket Ground in January 1994. He made his debut against the West Indies in Brisbane in November 1992 and has played seven Tests overall at an average of 28.11.
Ponting, who was injured after crashing into the fence while fielding at the SCG in Australia's Carlton & United Series victory over Pakistan in February, underwent a fitness test with Australian team physiotherapist Errol Alcott at Mascot Park and then consulted specialist Martin Sullivan at St Vincent's Clinic. The testing caused discomfort to Ponting's right ankle as a result of unsettled joint trauma, and he will continue to receive treatment and his condition will be reviewed next week.
Martyn was given the nod over a hot list of candidates including fellow West Australian Simon Katich, NSW Blues captain Michael Bevan, Queensland allrounder Andrew Symonds and Southern Redbacks captain Darren Lehmann.
The squad: Stephen Waugh (c - NSW) Shane Warne (vc - VIC) Greg Blewett (SA) Damien Fleming (VIC) Adam Gilchrist (WA) Matthew Hayden (QLD) Michael Kasprowicz (QLD) Justin Langer (WA) Brett Lee (NSW) Damien Martyn (WA) Glenn McGrath (NSW) Colin Miller (TAS) Michael Slater (NSW) Mark Waugh (NSW).
