Ribblesdale League: Treble chance
The Lancashire Evening Telegraph
There's a familiar look to the Jennings Ribblesdale League title
chase, as the three main contenders, Padiham, Ribblesdale Wanderers
and Cherry Tree, enter the last lap.
And David Hayes, skipper of 1997 champions Cherry Tree, readily
admits the outcome is in "the lap of the gods".
Wanderers led the way going into the weekend's double-header, with
Cherry Tree second and defending champions Padiham third - just two
points separating the title hopefuls, who finished as the top three
last summer.
Tomorrow, Cherry Tree have a tricky away game at Great Harwood, a
side capable of beating the very best on their day.
And they visit the Cliffe with both batting and bowling ranks
significantly weakened by the loss of Nigel Robbins and John Hughes
through holidays.
"We look like being a bit stretched for the rest of the season and
it's difficult to replace players of that quality," said Hayes.
"But it's just good to be involved again and it's very tight. I think
it's probably down to the top three now and, while no-one wants to
lose games, with teams playing each other you can't say what's going
to happen.
"I certainly don't think you can pick a favourite out of the three of
us.
"We looked like we were struggling, then we beat Padiham to open it
up again. We beat Wanderers in the league but were hammered by them
in the cup final.
"You can only give yourselves a chance and hope for the best. The
weather, bonus points - everything could play a part between now and
the end of the season."
Sunday's fixtures: Baxenden v Oswaldtwistle Imm, Edenfield v
Clitheroe, Great Harwood v Cherry Tree, Padiham v Barnoldswick, Read v
Whalley, Ribblesdale W v Blackburn N, Settle v Earby.
