Tasmania upset the first day of Queensland's Pura Cup defence as the home side was dismissed for a disappointing 196 at the Gabba. Only Clinton Perren, who collected an important 82, was able to provide lasting resistance in between the innings faltering at both ends. At stumps the Tigers had cut the deficit by 70 with the loss of Tim Paine to Andy Bichel for 34.
The Bulls were in early trouble at 3 for 35 and the end was also eventful as Brendan Drew and Dan Marsh sparked a collapse of 6 for 18. Perren's contribution included 12 fours, one six and useful stands of 58 with Lachlan Stevens (29) and 85 with James Hopes (32) before being bowled by Marsh.
Marsh also swept through Bichel and Nathan Rimmington to pick up 3 for 23 while Drew finished the innings with 3 for 45. Adam Griffith, who made the initial breakthrough of Jimmy Maher, and Ben Hilfenhaus collected two wickets each to complete a fine team bowling display.
Queensland's day began brightly with Bichel proving his fitness from a hip injury, but his selection was offset by the withdrawal of Ashley Noffke with a back problem. The first exchanges were also bleak for the Bulls with Maher departing in the fifth over and Hilfenhaus removing the dangerous pair of Martin Love and Matthew Hayden.
