Vodafone announce 1999 Cricket World Cup XI
World Cup sponsors Vodafone, have announced details of the Vodafone 1st
XI for the 1999 Cricket World Cup. After each match in the World Cup, a
selection of journalists have been asked to award points to the
outstanding bowlers, batsmen and fielders.
After 41 of the 42 matches the voting is now complete and the Vodafone
1st XI is as follows:
1. Herschelle Gibbs (South Africa)
2. Neil Johnson (Zimbabwe)
3. Rahul Dravid (India)
4. Jacques Kallis (South Africa)
5. Steve Waugh (capt) (Australia)
6. Jonty Rhodes (South Africa)
7. Moin Khan (w/k) (Pakistan)
8. Lance Klusener (South Africa)
9. Saqlain Mushtaq (Pakistan)
10. Allan Donald (South Africa)
11. Geoff Allott (New Zealand)
The team includes six front line bowlers - Donald, Allott, Saqlain,
Klusener, Johnson and Kallis. Steve Waugh is selected as Captain and the
specialist close to the wicket fielder is Jonty Rhodes, with Moin Khan
getting the vote as wicket keeper. Moin along with Rhodes and Klusener
would provide the big hitting and acceleration towards the end of the innings.
Only players reaching the Super Six stage of the Tournament gained
enough points to gain selection. Alan Mullally was the closest
England player to selection.
