Dav Whatmore has officially thrown his name in the hat for England
coach as the five-man working party convened at Lord's to discuss
David Lloyd's successor.
Lancashire coach Whatmore and Glamorgan's Duncan Fletcher are
favourites to succeed Lloyd, who left Old Trafford in 1996 to join
the international stage. He will now become a commentator with Sky TV.
But as the panel, headed by Brian Bolus, the England Management
Advisory Committee chairman, met for the first time to consider their
options, Whatmore revealed the great "honour" he felt at being
considered for the post. "I'm genuinely interested in the job," said
Whatmore, who guided Lancashire to second in the championship and won
the NatWest Trophy and the Sunday League last season.
"It would be a tremendous opportunity for me if it gets to that
stage, but I appreciate that others are involved - in fact, I regard
it as an honour even to be mentioned.
"Lancashire have given me their blessing, but I'm a great believer in
what will be, will be. I'm not worrying too much about it all."
Australia captain Steve Waugh is unlikely to bowl again in the World
Cup after an injury scare. All-rounder Waugh, 34, aggravated a groin
strain during his side's Super Sixes win over India at the Oval last
Friday.
