Wins for Canada and Cayman Islands on Day Five of Under-19s Championship
Argentina won the toss and elected to field once again so their young players could get the exposure and experience
Game # 9 Argentina v Cayman Islands
Argentina won the toss and elected to field once again so their young players could get the exposure and experience. Cayman Islands batsmen did not disappoint as Argentina for the fourth time faced a large total, today it was 282 in 50 overs.
Joseph Kirkconnell with 110 and skipper Paul Chin (34) shared a fourth wicket stand of 88 as the only bowler with respectable figures was Esteban Nino 2/34 in 10 overs.
In reply Argentine had their best batting performance as the skipper Julian Bordacahar scored 54 and Julian Villarino added 26. Most encouraging for this young squad was the fact they batted the full 50 overs scoring 140/9.
Joseph Kirkconnell was man of the match.
Game # 10 Bermuda v Canada
Canada won the toss and elected to bat.
Canada went into this game knowing they could lose the game and still win the championship because of their superior net run rate over both Bermuda and Cayman Islands the two other teams likely to share in the points standings. However they could not afford to lose by a large margin.
Batting first and making a low score would certainly give Bermuda a good chance of improving their run rate sufficient enough to win the championship.
Bermuda was well on the way of making this a reality as they removed the two opening batsmen for 16 runs but a third wicket stand of 146 between Muhammad Qazi (89) and Trevin Bastiampillai (53) had a tremendous impact on the game plan for Bermuda. Most of the Canadian batsmen got themselves out rather than be beaten by the bowlers but they manage to post a respectable total of 271 all out in 47.5 overs This meant Bermuda would have to pass the Canadian total somewhere in the 35th over of play.
Bermuda give indications at the start they would be willing to chase this score but when Dion Stovell was given run out with the score at 25 it seems the game plan was changed to beat the target score and settle for second place.
Canada missing their opening bowler Simon Upton who suffered a broken figure fielding a ball in the previous game could not stop the Bermudians from scoring freely and as the score mounted it was apparent that both teams wanted to win outright. Adding to the dramatics was the fact that the Canadians were pulling "the rabbit out of the hat" as the wicket keeper Jonathan Roberts was given the difficult task of bowling the final over with only three runs required. Roberts who had bowled on previous tours had not touched the ball this tournament and could not have imagined that he would be put in a position like this. One ball two runs to win, a swipe and miss by the batsman and Canada wins by one run to go undefeated in the tournament.
Man of the match was Muhammad Qazi.
