Canada Men's Cricket Team History
History suggests cricket was played in Canada as far back as the 18th century. An English schoolmaster named George Barber is credited with spreading the game there by helping found the Toronto Cricket Club in 1827.In 1844 Canada played USA in the first ever international match anywhere, held in New York. England toured Canada 15 years later, and Canada reciprocated with their first official tour in 1887, on which they beat Ireland, Derbyshire, Warwickshire and Leicestershire. Five years later, the Canadian Cricket Association was formed.
In 1932, the Australians, under Vic Richardson, toured; that side included Don Bradman, who made 260 against Western Ontario. Matches against USA resumed in 1963. A high point came in 1975 when Canada (playing as Eastern Canada) beat the touring Australians led by Ian Chappell.
More success followed soon after. In 1979, Canada participated in the World Cup for the first time, although they lost all three of their matches. Their next appearance in the tournament came almost a quarter-century later, at the 2003 World Cup. At that event they beat Bangladesh by 60 runs, and in a game against West Indies, their opening batter John Davison smacked a 67-ball century, at the time the fastest in World Cups.
Canada qualified for the next two ODI World Cups too, but their only victory in nine games came against Kenya in 2011. That tournament remains the last time Canada appeared in a World Cup. Their first appearance in the T20 World Cup came in the West Indies and USA in 2024.
