Women`s cricket association of Sri Lanka inaugurated
At last the doors have been flung open for women`s cricket in Sri
Lanka with the inauguration of the Women`s Cricket Association of
Sri Lanka with the President of the Board of Control for Cricket
In Sri Lanka, Upali Dharmadasa presiding at the first meeting
held at the BCCSL along with Vice-President, Thilanga Sumathipala.
Initially nine clubs and teams sought membership and among them
an association from the Polonnaruwa District that have over four
hundred girls playing hardball cricket.
`Our priority is them`, said the newly elected President, Ms.
Gwen Herat `and we hope to go in the near future and assess their
potential with our coach, Guy de Alwis, a former national
wicket-keeper``.
Sri Lanka is the only country apart from West Indies that do not
take pact in international women`s cricket from among the Test
Nations but that too will become a reality soon.
The Constitution presented at the meeting was adopted after
amendments were made by all members.
President: Gwen Herat, Vice Presidents: Mrs. V. G. I. L. Vithana, Jayantha Aponso, Secretary: Mrs. M. Munaweera, Asst.
Secretary: Miss K. Liyanaarachchi, Treasurer: Sushilough
Wijeratne, Asst. Treasurer: Mrs. C. Thilakaratne, Chairman,
Coaching Committee: Mr. Guy de Alwis, Chairman, Tournament Committee: Mr. Lester Hannibalz.
An Executive Committee of Nine members were also elected.
