James Hopes installed as Queensland captain

Cricinfo staff

The allrounder James Hopes has been awarded the Queensland captaincy after Chris Simpson stood down on Monday night following two testing seasons in charge. Hopes will be the state's 49th captain and will mix the job with his limited-overs appointments with the national team.

Simpson, an offspinning allrounder, was a calm and thoughtful leader but struggled individually with bat and ball while in charge. Under his guidance the Bulls made two Pura Cup finals and won the FR Cup in 2008-09, but ultimately the side required someone who could provide guaranteed contributions in all formats.

"I accepted the role because I felt we needed the stability now in the group,'' Hopes said. "Chris has stood aside to concentrate on his one-day cricket, not ruling out the possibility of playing four-day cricket too I'm sure, so my appointment is one of stability. If you look at us, I'm probably the most senior player in the group but I'm also confident we have got the players in the squad that can take over if I am required for Australian duty."

Hopes averages around 30 with bat and ball in 61 first-class matches and also has the advantage of being a proven performer during 83 one-day internationals. He has captained Queensland in an FR Cup match and three Twenty20 games.

No vice-captain has been appointed. Queensland's first game of the season is a split-innings one-dayer against Tasmania at the Gabba on October 6.

Advance-Australia_Fair, i'd hazard a guess that there will be a massive push for sachin to get the VC role. That's not a Victoria Cross, but i'm sure he should get one of those too. But sachin doesn't play for Qld you say. Doesn't matter, cricket is all about sachin, any article that doesn't mention sachin is wrong.

@Runster1 Your comment has nothing to do with this article at all, but thanks for rambling on about nothing. James Hopes is a fine choice for Queensland, always liked him in the ODI squad and he should do well.

Hopes is probably as good a choice as could be made and will do a good job. Simpson is a superb captain and, like Paullie, I'd really like to see him sort his own form out and really cement his place in the side on playing ability alone. They will probably go for Chris Hartley as vice-captain.

LOL. How boring...who watches sheffield shield and these competitions? I remember on 7 news in sport in the 3rd day of SS final, there was only 1 person in the stands!!! LOL. Or maybe some other day in the final or sumthin. But seriously! 1!! LOL Fail. Pura cup? etc? yawn.

Oh thanks Josh_Schon81, I must have missed that. and @dsig3: he'll be with them for probably four months of the six month season, so it's not as if he'll be there one game, away the next sort of thing. He'll play/captain for Qld through Oct-Nov-Dec and probably half of January, then he'll join the national squad and someone else will captain thru Feb-March.

A well-deserved opportunity for a great servant of Qld and Australian cricket. I feel for Simpson, though, who has done a fine job during his tenure. Personally, I'd love to see Simpson get his four day mojo back and serve as cover for Hopes when he plays ODI's. The Bulls are in good hands between these two.

Seriously? I know some state captains are playing in Aus squads but they become captains before they play for their country. Bulls must not have much faith that catfish will keep his spot in the ODI's. I would imagine it would hard to lead a team part time.

thats what it says in the last paragraph Advance Australia Fair. I hope Hopesy goes great guns and presses for further honours even?

  • Advance-Australia-Fair on September 7, 2010, 3:14 GMT

So who is vice-captain for when Hopes is playing the ODIs? Is it Simpson or someone else?
