Lyon added to Australia A squad

ESPNcricinfo staff

Test spinner Nathan Lyon will have a chance to put into match practice some of his recent work with Muttiah Muralitharan after being added to the Australia A squad to take on India A in Brisbane.

Lyon was already in Brisbane training at the National Cricket Centre and Australia's selectors decided he would benefit from some game time ahead of the Test series against Pakistan in the UAE in October.

"Nathan has been added to the squad to give him the opportunity to play some first-class cricket in preparation for Australia's upcoming tour against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates in October," Darren Lehmann, the national coach and selector on duty for the Australia A matches, said.

Lyon has been added for the second four-day match at Allan Border Field, which starts on Sunday. In the first match at the same venue, Queensland legspinner Cameron Boyce was Australia's only specialist spinner and finished with four wickets for the game.

Lyon recently returned from Sri Lanka, where he had been working with Muralitharan, who has been named as a coaching consultant for Australia for their series against Pakistan.

@dunger.bob, I'm glad I'm not the only one who rates Berendorff, I was very impressed with some of his performances last year. Plenty of tall timber amongst our young quicks that's for sure!

@xtrafalgarx - 5 years? Lyon seems a good bloke and I want him to do well, but a traditinoal finger spinner is never gonna turn the ball as much as a leggie, and if Muirhead develops at a decent pace, he'll be the first choice within 3 years, I suspect.

@ Jono Makim: That's a good point. I was thinking that maybe Lyon & Murali had been working on something and wanted to see how it went against some accomplished players of spin. If that's actually true then I can see why they've made the move. .. if it's not close to the money then yeah, why not give one of the young blokes a run or even just leave it as it was. It is an A squad after all.

I don't know that I'm a fan of this move. Good for Lyon, but I'd rather see one of Agar, Rose, Zampa or Muirhead. I'm not sure that one game in July is going to help Lyon THAT much come October. The others, on the other hand, may just learn a great deal on where their strengths and weaknesses lie against good players of spin bowling.

@Viv, that's a long list! To be honest I don't know that we are that well endowed with test quality quicks. If we are going in with just two, and one of them is Johnson, then the other will almost certainly be Siddle I'd have thought.

@ VivGilchrist: Here's a couple more. Berendorff from WA (I'm almost a fan boy of his, he's going places) and Abbott from NSW.

@xtrafalgarx, sorry for that oversight. Insert Siddle, Starc, Sayers, Bird, Bollinger, Hilfy etc, etc in his place.

@Vivgilchrist: Pattinson is still recovering from injury and has put himself off limits until the next shield season pretty much because he wants to refine his action to make himself less susceptible to injury. From the sounds of the interviews he has given, he wants to give himself 12-18 months at least away from international cricket.

Whatever the case the Lyon should be bowling in tandem with OKeefe as they compliment eachother well when they play for NSW. MJ, Patto, Lyon,OKeefe, and Watson, with backup from Smith in the Tests v Pak in October.

Ashokdmightyindia Yes i wouldn't want his career to be ended , but the last time i remember him bowling to India , he got Sachin plumb in front , bowled pujara and stunned kohli.

  • James on July 10, 2014, 9:02 GMT

@Ozcricketwriter: Keep dreaming. He couldn't be anymore entrenched into the team - i don't see anyone rivaling him for 5 years at least.
