Mortaza to lead Bangladesh in T20s

22

Mashrafe Mortaza has been named Bangladesh's captain for the two Twenty20s against Sri Lanka. He will lead in place of Mushfiqur Rahim, who sustained a finger injury during the second Test.

BCB president Nazmul Hassan spoke to a few directors of the board from Singapore to come to the decision. Tamim Iqbal will continue as vice-captain, and although he was expected to be promoted, Mashrafe's seniority and experience as captain counted in his favour.

Mashrafe led the team in a single Test match, in 2009, during which he got injured while bowling. After recovering, he captained in seven ODIs in 2010 after which he got injured again, and Shakib Al Hasan took over from 2011.

Both Twenty20s will be held at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, on February 12 and 14. Mushfiqur is expected to return for the three-match ODI series, which begins on February 17, and his injury on his left little finger will be monitored on a daily basis.

The optimist in me wants to believe that BD will win the ODI series 2-1 but realist in me says that SL will win it 2-1. T20 is a crap shoot. No prediction there. I do want a good competitive series with sportsmanship. Go Tigers!

It is time for see previous records and how both teams have performed in the limited over tournaments. As far as the T20 concerned BAN is still in the early stages of the is type. BAN have shown success rate of 100% only against Ireland but in contrast SRI have shown 100% success rate against 6 nations and more than 75% success rate against AUS, ENG and WI. Cricket is very funny game and T20s are even funnier. All in all my conclusion is the series will be belong to SRI by far but it will be good fight because BAN is a very good upcoming team for limited over cricket.

Agree with Warm_Coffee. It's time to select different test and limited over teams and create pools of specialized test/T20 players. For the near future -

T20/ODI pool: Tamim, Anamul, Kayes, Mithun, Sabbir, Mukhtar, Taijul, Arafat, Elias, Razzak, Taskin, Mashrafe, Rubel

Test pool: Marshall, Naeem, Mahmudullah, Gazi, Enamul Jnr., Suhrawardi, Farhad, Robiul, Nazmul

Both: Mushfiq, Shakib, Nasir, Zia, Al-Amin

  • Warm_Coffee on February 9, 2014, 9:49 GMT

Biggest mistake for Bangladesh in T20 is picking some players who perform in longer forms to its shortest form. The fact of the matter is some players are suited for tests, others for T20s and so on. I think Bangladesh's T20 batting is fine but its the bowling which damages us. My 11 for this T20 series and tournament would be like this:- Tamim, Shamsur, Anamul, Shakib, Rahim, Nasir, Sabbir, Mithun, Rahman, Razzak and Al-Amin.

  • on February 9, 2014, 9:43 GMT

But he is not a t20 player. Nasir would have been perfect.

  • Rafelgibt on February 9, 2014, 9:00 GMT

My best 11 would be- 1. Anamul Haque 2. Shamsur Rahman 3. Shakib Al Hasan 4. Mithun Ali 5. Nasir Hossain 6. Sabbir Rahman 7. Forhad Reza 8. Shohag Gazi 9. Mashrafee Mortaza 10. Arafat Sunny 11. Al Amin Hossain

Definitely mortaza is originally a great baller but now he is not what he used to be. I think he would be very expensive and cost us games , may be its better if he is not in the team.

  • asiacricket1234 on February 8, 2014, 22:56 GMT

Great decision. If he wasn't such injury prone he would have been a better choice as a captain. Anyway Tamim is not ready for captaincy. We saw how clueless he was in Test when Mushi was out of field. So Mash is the perfect choice.Wish him Luck. May Allah Bless us. It'll be nice to win few matches against a Top team like SL

Oh No ! It should be Shakib & only Shakib !! No 1 A/R in the world , most experienced & most respected cricketer in BD !!!

this dessition is no good.sakib al hasan very good captain.

  • Cpt.Meanster on February 8, 2014, 19:16 GMT

Hmm, interesting decision. Hopefully he can gel his players well and make them to think and play aggressively because Bangladesh have a good chance to shine in T20 cricket.

  • reyme on February 8, 2014, 18:03 GMT

Good decision. Tamim has a long way to go in captaincy. He did not lead his side well in Second Test, Day 2, while Mushy was out.

  • on February 8, 2014, 17:56 GMT

    Good Luck Mashrafe Mortaza

  • on February 8, 2014, 17:50 GMT

It is not a encouraging decision by our responsible selectors. As Mashrafee position is not secure in the team for his fitness then why selectors suddenly made a decision like that. I think selectors are changing and doing too soon. There are players like Nasir and Gazi . Specially Nasir can be a great captain in future then why not try with him, BD also needs different captain in other formats and they should also need to make a future captain at least for t20 level. Musfique has lots of burden in his shoulder. Even Shakib can lead from the front specially Shakib is more suitable for T20 format.
