Toss England chose to bowl vs South Africa
Harry Brook asked South Africa to bat first on winning the toss on a dank September afternoon at Lord's, and said that the "series starts today" for his England side after their thrashing at Headingley.
They left Sonny Baker out after his eye-watering figures of 0 for 76 from seven overs on Tuesday, the most expensive analysis for an England debutant in men's ODI history, with Saqib Mahmood returning to share the new ball with Jofra Archer. "It's good to have him back in the side," Brook said. "Nothing against Sonny, but we feel that's the right decision."
The toss - along with the start - was pushed back by 15 minutes after heavy rain showers in north-west London on Thursday morning, which could return later in the day. "Hopefully, it'll have a little bit in it to start with and we can make use of that," Brook said. "It's a new day. We feel like the series starts today for us."
South Africa were forced to make two changes from the side that romped to a seven-wicket win with 175 balls to spare in Leeds, with Tony de Zorzi (hamstring) and Wiaan Mulder (illness) dropping out. Matthew Breetzke, who has scored 378 runs in his first four ODI innings, returns from a hamstring niggle, while Senuran Muthusamy returns in Mulder's spot as an allrounder.
"We would have looked to bowl, considering the conditions - the wicket and the overheads," Temba Bavuma, their captain, said. "We'll just have to do the job with the bat."
