Sehwag fit for full Champions League

ESPNcricinfo staff

Virender Sehwag has recovered from his ankle injury and will be fit to play in Delhi Daredevils' opening Champions League 2012 match, against Kolkata Knight Riders, on Saturday. He had played in the franchise's warm-up game on Thursday, against Sydney Sixers.

Daredevils' team mentor, TA Sekar, confirmed that Sehwag was fit, and said that he had obtained fitness clearance before flying to South Africa. A BCCI official said the board had nothing to do with the decision to play Sehwag: "The BCCI has nothing to do with it. It is a franchise tournament and it is for them to take a call."

Sehwag was initially doubtful for the Champions League, after straining a ligament in his left ankle during India's Super Eights match in the World Twenty20 against South Africa in Colombo on October 2. He had gone off the field during South Africa's innings and did not return, and it was reported that he could require two weeks of rest.

His fitness has been suspect over the past year: after the 2011 World Cup he delayed a shoulder surgery, playing the IPL and subsequently missed India's tour of the West Indies and half of the Test series in England. Earlier this year, towards the end of the Australia tour, he had back spasms that forced the selectors to rest him for the Asia Cup.

Sehwag will not captain Delhi Daredevils at the Champions League, having asked the franchise to relieve him of the responsibility so he could concentrate on his batting.

@ G.Narsimha... well we dont need share on others issue is if its indian investment then why ICC is supporting it and creating a special window for this tournament..? and you know the qualifying round was a joke..where you loose just one game and you are out...while the losers of other domestic event are directly in the main round.. my point is just this that it should not be called as Champions league and ICC should not create a special window for it in its FTP, bcoz it can harm test cricket schedule as John Inverarity an australian selector mentioned today that its not it should be called as ISA League....

@ashankar this is just a stat for fun but what about 4 teams from India & all are directly qualified.

Never a concern. He will be fit for club cricket always and somehow when intl cricket comes, suddenly he gets injured.Dhoni knows a thing or two about his injury.

Completely agree with @Jose Puliampatta. Players like Gambhir and Sehwag who haven't performed for India for more than a year are suffering from Captainitis. They should be sent back to Ranji Trophy so that they can get cured. As Nampally pointed out - new openers should be tried out from the following - Dhawan, Vijay, Mukund & Rahane, with Chand not too far.

It doesnt really matter if sehwag is out with a injury for England series. He is never serious about his place in team due to the confidence given by team mangament and selectors. he is better off the team and give some young gun like rahane/Tiwary a chance. Even if he is playin he wont score more than 100(in whole series because it is subcontinent and not more than 50 outside). Also the outcome of the game is decided with the absence of KP.

why ipl teams draw so much attention.. 64 comments v/s only 7 comments for titans / perth preview.. not good for inspiring cricket globally ..

Great Guys..... You People will be very fit for IPL and Champions League But not while playing for Indian Team. Keep up the good work.

You don't have to fit to play 2 overs. So why worry about his fitness? Let him play his 10 balls. Even an unfit player is more active on the field than Viru.

The more the teams from IPL, the more will be the money...
