Alfonso, Marsh out of Perth squad

The Perth Scorchers have made two changes in their Champions League squad. Alfonso Thomas, the Somerset fast bowler, will not be available for the tournament as Somerset have chosen to retain him for the ongoing county season. Perth have named South Australia fast bowler, Joe Mennie, as his immediate replacement.

Shaun Marsh, the Australia batsman, who recently pulled up with a hamstring injury during the fourth ODI against England, has also been ruled out of the Champions League, with Marcus North being named his replacement.

"It is obviously disappointing not to have Alfonso available," Ben Oliver, the general manager of cricket operations for Perth Scorchers, said. "However, it is not unexpected and is part of the landscape of Twenty20 cricket.

"In saying this, it is a great opportunity for Joe, who is a talented young bowler who performed well for us in last year's CLT20 tournament. Marcus is a proven performer at international level and we welcome his experience back into the side.

"He was unlucky to miss initial selection in the squad, but has returned from the UK in good form and we look forward to him contributing to what we hope will be a successful Champions League campaign."

Perth have been in Darwin the last week, acclimatising to conditions which they perceive as similar to what they expect in India. The squad competed in a three-game T20 series against NT Strike, which they won 2-1.

They are expected to fly out of Perth on Tuesday morning, with their first game against Highveld Lions on September 23 in Ahmedabad.

Perth Scorchers: Simon Katich (capt), Ashton Agar, Michael Beer, Jason Behrendorff, Hilton Cartwright, Burt Cockley, Liam Davis, Brad Hogg, Joe Mennie, Marcus North, Joel Paris, Tom Triffitt, Ashton Turner, Adam Voges, Sam Whiteman.

Agar, Beer, Hogg, Turner...How many spinners do they plan on playing at a time?

  • Thefakebook on September 18, 2013, 18:04 GMT

I don't see a pure bats man in the team, its a worry yes Katich and North are war vets but I think and its just me saying they are past their prime.

Rajeev129 - I think half the IPL teams deserve to play the qualifiers. Have max 2 teams per country auto qualify for the tournament proper and the rest go through a qualifying stage.

  • Biggus on September 17, 2013, 5:12 GMT

@Rajeev129:-You can't change the rules of a competition when it's already in progress, as it is since the selection process has already been decided. To change the rules at this stage would be blatantly unfair and set a very poor precedent, that should be rather obvious.

Poor Scorchers, its hard to see they are without all their star players. This means Hogg, Beer will have to play out of their skins in this tournament. But, this CLT20 will help Adam Voges to get used to the conditions for the upcoming ODI series vs India.

@dwblurb, nice one. you should learn that Australian cricket administrators don't actually need facts to make their decisions. to quote Homer (simpson that is) "facts can be used to prove anything that's even remotely true"....

Great for us that Alfonso is staying - shows he's an honourary West Country boy nowadays!

Where is Coulter Nile ? No Marsh brothers hmmmm but Scorchers will win full support of me. Agar, Hogg out and Beer IN.

  • on September 16, 2013, 14:12 GMT

For starters I'm glad to see Alfonso's got his priorities right. But Perth fans, from my own experience as a Somerset fan, I saw my team get to the semis for the most part without Trescothick, Kieswetter and Buttler and with a wicketkeeper who hadn't even been in 2nd team cricket. Of course Katich and Voges will have to have very good tournaments with the bat, but the spin attack of Beer, Agar & Hogg could take Perth some way in Indian conditions.

  • mandi on September 16, 2013, 12:54 GMT

sad to see no star in this team, this team matches going to harm clt20 tv viewers

  • Winsome on September 16, 2013, 11:05 GMT

Joke of a squad now. No bowlers or batsmen - apart from Kat and Voges - to speak of.

  • Rajeev129 on September 16, 2013, 9:16 GMT

I think this team deserves to play Qualifiers instead of one among any 4 teams that are playing from tomorrow. During BBL Perth Scorchers were really strong with the likes of Hussey, Gibbs, Marsh Brothers, Coulter-Nile, Alfonso Thomas. But all of them are missing now and most of their players are playing for the first time on Indian soil. They will surely struggle in the tournament.

  • dwblurb on September 16, 2013, 8:46 GMT

Marcus North has "returned from the UK in good form," has he? Such good form that he was dropped mid-way through the county season by one of the lower sides. Hate to see him in poor form.

  • Munkeymomo on September 16, 2013, 8:34 GMT

Huge thanks to Alfonso for staying with Somerset for the big crunch game of the season, last game could determine relegation. That why the cidercountry loves ya' son!
