India to pick ODI squad on Tuesday

119

India's national selection panel will give a first indication of its World Cup plans on Tuesday when the selectors sit down to pick the squad for the limited-overs leg of the England tour. The selection committee, chaired by Sandeep Patil, will pick the squad for five ODIs, and a one-off Twenty20, starting August 25.

It will be interesting to see if the selectors reward fringe ODI specialists who were tried out at the higher level over the last couple of months. Barring a few regulars like Suresh Raina and Ajinkya Rahane, the squad to Bangladesh for three ODIs comprised mostly the domestic and IPL performers. And the same lot was given an extended run during India A's recent tour of Australia, which culminated with a triumphant campaign in the quadrangular one-day competition.

The selectors have closely followed the progress of the A team in Australia: while Rajinder Singh Hans watched the two four-day games from the sidelines, he was replaced by Vikram Rathour for the quadrangular series.

The selectors will have to decide if Raina, Robin Uthappa and Cheteshwar Pujara - none of whom had a memorable outing in Bangladesh - deserve to remain in contention for the World Cup. Uthappa, the star of the IPL, was one of only two India players to have scored a fifty in Bangladesh. Even though he shone with his captaincy skills during the Emerging Players Tournament in Australia, Uthappa had a mediocre outing with the bat. He scored 134 runs from seven innings during the tournament.

It also remains to be seen if the selectors reward fringe performers, and rest a key bowler like Bhuvneshwar Kumar whose fitness is being stretched during the five-Test series in England. Umesh Yadav, one of the stars of the first-class matches on the A tour, is likely to earn his place back in the squad.

Sanju Samson impressed with his sound technique and temperament during the A tour, including the team management. But he will have to compete with the in-form Naman Ojha if the selectors decide to include a wicketkeeper-batsman as back up for MS Dhoni.

The spin duo of Akshar Patel and Parvez Rasool has been consistent both in Bangladesh and Australia. But their chances depend on the balance of the squad, which will be finalised after discussing it with Dhoni and coach Duncan Fletcher. Both Dhoni and Fletcher are likely to join the meeting from Manchester via video conferencing.

The balance of the squad would also determine the fate of Manoj Tiwary, the perennial nearly man of Indian team. Tiwary had a decent run in Australia and has also showed his prowess with the ball, picking a five-for in one-dayers.

One player who is certain to retain his place in the side is allrounder Stuart Binny. The Karnataka allrounder registered the best figures by an Indian in the second ODI in Bangladesh, which was followed by a Test debut in England.

I think Bhuvi and Ishant will be rested. If India decide to take 16 then Rishi Dhawan/Akshar Patel may get a look in.

I dont think that people are following ranji trophy or India A tours. I mean how can you ignore someone like Kedar Jadhav. He is much better than Rayadu, Tiwary or Binny. He deserves a chance in the lower middle order. Sanju samson should also be included. Even Manan vohra and Unmukt chand should be given some chances because our openers are not doing well. While in the bowling department Karn Sharma should be given a look in, to put some pressure on Jadeja.

They have no choice but to look ahead and induct the fringe players who have done an outstanding job in Oz If it means taking Ojha and Samson both so be it and if it means Manoj Tiwari replacing someone else so be it too Dhoni can play as batsman If it means some seniors exiting so be it Uthappa has had his chances If Umesh has to be added I dont see which paceman from the current lot he will replace unless Bhuv Kumar is to be rested It is unlikely there will be room for an extra spinner

The likely pick will be something like this: 1.R Sharma 2. S Dhawan 3. V Kohli 4. A, Rahane 5. S. Raina 6. M. Dhoni 7. R. Jadeja 8. R. Ashwin 9. M. Shami 10. B. Kumar 11. U. Yadav - and we will also have 12. Naman Ohja, 13. Dhawal Kulkarni, 14. Akshar Patel and 15. Kedar Jadhav - to complete the fifteen. If Bhuvi is injured, Varun Aaron may get a look in. I dont think Stuart Binny will be in the squad as a Bowling Allrounder, as his bowling may not be so suitable for english conditions as the test tour seems to have found out. Naman Ohja/K Jadhav may fill in if anyone of the top six batsmen fail - both playing as pure batsmen. It is a pity that we dont have room for players like Rishi Dhavan. Sanju Samson is young and can bide his time.

Batting is not a worry for India in the run-up to the WC...With Virat and MSD we have two of the best batsman of modern era...Bowling is a major concern...With jadeja and ashwin likely to be our no.7 and no.8, we need to zero in on 3 good fast bowlers that can pick early wickets albeit being a touch expensive...Bhuvi looks the only certainty which leaves Shami, Ishant, Umesh, Aaron, Pandey, M.Sharma, D.Kulkarni among others to fight it out!!! D.Kulkarni is perfect for English conditions and should be given a chance alongwith umesh yadav in eng odis...As far as batting is concerned Rohit seems certain to open in WC with Virat @ 3, Rahane @ 4, Raina @ 5, MSD @ 6...Dhawan needs to tighten his game as Gambhir & Utthappa are reliable options for India to fall back upon!!!

I am against doing these selections when one series is already going on because if some players who are in the current series do not get selected then it can be disheartening and demotivating factor to such players. I understand there may be some reasons why the next series (ODI series) players need to be selected in the middle of an ongoing series because the new players may need time to travel from india to england (in this instance), but why not just name those players who are not in the current test squad and are currently in india, in otherwords do not name the full squad, mention only those names of the players who have to travel and join the current team in england, and the names of the players in the ongoing test series can be revealed only after the 5th test is over (after the final ball of the 5th test is bowled) - this way those players in the current test series who do not get selected for the ODI series do not feel sad and demotivated.

  • on August 5, 2014, 8:12 GMT

Again disappointed that Kedar Jadhav does not features in this article even after such an impressive showing...!!

  • Niju_001 on August 5, 2014, 8:10 GMT

I done understand why people are yelling to include Irfan Pathan and Robin Uthappa.. these two are flops! thats it! they might flash in couple of games during IPL but otherwise they are no good for present day International standards. Dhoni should be feeling the pressure now... his captaincy is weakening day by day and his batting is dropping even faster. Indias future wicket keeping prospects are Naman Ojha, WSaha and Sanju Samson. Considering the out of form Dhawan, Rohit and Raina Sanju should be played in the team as a specialist batsman. He needs to be groomed at No.4 in ODI's where he will get a chance to play together with Kohli who bats at No.3 and later with Dhoni. This will make him more committed and responsible matured cricketer.

  • on August 5, 2014, 8:00 GMT

  • on August 5, 2014, 7:56 GMT

Umesh too, certainly. (I missed earlier)

  • on August 5, 2014, 7:52 GMT

    The article says:

"...The selectors will have to decide if Raina, Robin Uthappa and Cheteshwar Pujara - none of whom had a memorable outing in Bangladesh - deserve..."

As long as Dhoni is the captain, Raina will be in. Hope, he performs well with bat & ball.

Though the W-K batsman Naman Ojha is already in England, hope the selectors will give a chance to Sanju Samson. Even if he gets only nets (with bat & big gloves), it will be extremely useful in his development. In fact, India can have batting practice with wicket-keepers. In fact the support staff & the touring selector/s (if any) can monitor the performance of all three W-K batsmen.

If Kedar Jadhav did well in Oz, perhaps he can be equally effective in England.

My choice of addition will include Sanju Samson, Kedar Jadhav, Rushi Dhawan, & Aksar Patel.

As a reader pointed out, I would also prefer the selectors announcing the deletions from the group touring England for tests, ONLY AFTER the fifth test is over & not now.

  • siddhartha87 on August 5, 2014, 7:50 GMT

Kedar Yadav deserves a place in the playing XI more than anyone else. He has capability to win matches single handedly. Hopefully India will not pick perennial flop Yuvraj Singh again. It's time to move on. Rahane is not doing any good in ODISs as well but looking at his recent form he will make it to the team.

    Playing XI should be-

    1.Sharma 2.Dhawan 3.Kohli 4. Rahane 5. Yadav 6.Dhoni 7.Jadeja 8. Ashwin/Mishra 9. Kumar 10. Yadav 11. Aaron

  • Harizs on August 5, 2014, 7:43 GMT

When u can give Rohit and Dhawan so much chance , Robin Uttappa deserves a place in Indian team for atleast coming series. It will b a huge injustice to his talent he ahs worked so hard for this and selectors please dont take this chance away from him. Although he didnt have a good outing with India A, he needs little more luck. He is a perfect opener for WC with Gautam who understand each other well , rotates strike very nicely n keep the scoring run going. PLEASE GIVE UTHAPPA ONE MORE CHANCE HE DESERVES IT, his technique are way better than rest of the openers we have right now.

  • Madddy on August 5, 2014, 7:28 GMT

Selectors... pls pick Sanju Samson for ODI series... Be fair & Give him chance at early stages and when he is in form... He is future of Indian cricket... Exceptional talent with bat... When you can pick Sachin at 15+, y not Sanju at 20... Pls be fair to him... Exiting to watch this guy playing... :) There are few non-performing players in team since couple of years, you can replace him. He will be a good prospect for next year's world cup... Another talent is Manan Vohra... He might also be considered... :)

  • Rohan0309 on August 5, 2014, 7:27 GMT

Kedar Jadhav had a more than decent outing in Australia. He got 4 chances and he scored 78 (in the final, also the highest score); 52; 87; and 8. If he was NOT from Maharashtra he would have played atleast 20 ODIs for India. Players from Maharashtra have always got a raw deal.

  • on August 5, 2014, 6:46 GMT

Odi team must be selected keeping the WC in minds. We must drop either Dawan or Rohit and bring in Tiwari or Naman Ohja.

Parvez Rasool is the Best Off-Spin Bowler and a useful Batsman. Foe World Cup 2015 he is a far better option than Jadeja, Ashwin and Patel.

  • karthik_ig on August 5, 2014, 5:03 GMT

Writer is saying that selectors have to decide whether raina, rahane and pujara is in contention for the world cup. I agree with the writer that they need to decide with pujara and rahane.but not Raina, he is a terrific one day player. In those banagladesh ODIs, low scoring matches he got starts in all the matches and he looked better than all the other players. Unfortunately he did not score any fifties. Remember we played only 2 and half matches there. Raina should be a sure selection in any ODI team at the moment. He is the player to watch in 2015 world cup. My team for the england odi series 1.Dhawan 2, rohit 3. Kohli 4. Raina 5. Rahane 6. Dhoni 7. Ashwin 8. Jadeja 9. bhuvi 10. Ishant 11. Umesh 12. Binny 13.Vinay kumar 14. Uthappa or Kedhar 15. Akshar patel..Aaron and Pankaj/shami can be given a chance if Bhuvi and Ishant are rested

Just look at probable playes who make in to the team, for opening pair, roht and dhawan or rahane and uthappa, 3. Kohli, 4. Tiwary or pujara, 5. Yuvi or rayudu, 6. Raina or binny, 7. Dhoni, 8. Aswin or jadeja, 9. Umesh, 10. Varun, 11.ishwar. Resting bhui and shami for couple of match is good option as far as ishant concern awoiding him from odis is bettar. Amit mishra too gud option as back up spinner.

    What do you guys think?

  • Zitions on August 5, 2014, 4:13 GMT

I would think these guys would be in contention for the World Cup next year Robin Uthappa Gautam Gambhir Shikhar Dhawan Ajinkya Rahane Virat Kohli Yuvraj Singh Suresh Raina Sanju Samson Rohit Sharma Mahendra Singh Dhoni Ravinder Jadaja Ravichandran Ashwin Pragyan Ojha Umesh Yadav Bhuvneshwar Kumar Ishant Sharma Mohammad Shami Zaheer Khan Stuary Binny

Its time that we kept this mind and picked the team because this is really just out last real exposure to ODI' before going into the world cup keeping in mind that the Australia tri nations series is a fairly short one with only limited exposure. The team mentioned above is a good combination of experience and youth and would have a good outing in the Australian consitions.

I'm quite surprised that Kedar Jadhav isn't mentioned in the article. He along with Sanju Samson are real positives from Quadrangular series. Hopefully selectors look beyond Rahane & Rayudu for the No 4 slot. K Jadhav & M Tiwary looks more suited to No 4 than them. N ojha/ S Samson could be the backup Keeper. Quicks after 5 tests will be quite tired. Mohit & Umesh might get back in. Now its interesting to see on whom selectors have faith in to complete the pace battery. Gambhir/ Rahane must be considered for backup opener.

Plz allow Raina to play as an opener...he can play a big role in mandatory powerplay just like his 25 balls 87 in ipl semi....bcoz fielders are in circle...he can score runs over the fielders in any ball....

  • sampu_sheikh on August 5, 2014, 0:21 GMT

My India squad in playing order: 1. Gambhir 2. Rahane 3. Kohli 4. Samson 5. Rohit Sharma 6. Dhoni 7. Binny 8. Ashwin 9. Aaron 10. Mohit 11. Umesh [Dhawan, Pujara, Jadeja and Pankaj as reserves] Bhuvi, Shami, Ishant need to be rested. They are not used to bowling so much and signs of fatigue are clearly visible. Samson deserves a place in the Indian XI. Gambhir and Rahane have much better technique against the new ball. Binny must play, he could be the X-factor in Aus/NZ.

ODI team considering next year world cup is in Australia: (1) Shikhar Dhawan (2) Manan Vohra (3) Rohit Sharma (4) Virat Kohli (5) Raina (6) Kedar Jadhav (7) Dhoni (8) Karn Sharma (9) Bhuvi (10) Shami (11) Umesh Yadav

Back up players: (12) Uthappa (13) Yuvraj (14) Ashwin (15) Ishwar Pandey (16) Rishi Dhawan.

Rishi Dhawan as fast bowling all-rounder, Uthappa as backup for opening or wicket keeper, Yuvraj bcos he has always performed in big games under pressure. Ishwar Pandey because he can bowl yorkers properly.

  • jainmanu on August 4, 2014, 22:37 GMT

For the fast bowling all-rounder slot why does everybody consider only Binny? They should consider Rishi Dhawan, as he is better fast bowler and batsman than Binny!!

In the current India A tour to Australia, Rishi Dhawan performed with both bat and bowl under pressure bowling yorkers in death overs and also scored 55 runs in last 10 overs while chasing 275 to win the final. He has proved in Ranji also by being in top 3 of both batting and bowling performers in the season.

  • satchander on August 4, 2014, 21:57 GMT

Its really sad that many of the people on this forum are posting that players like Yuvi, Sehwag and Gambhir should be brought back into the team knowing fully well that these players have failed repeatedly in Ranji. Please, can we look at grooming the future players like Sanju Samson, Naman Ojha, Parvez Rasol, Umesh Yadav, Pankaj Singh. We need new blood in the ODI team to win the world cup next year !

  • electric_loco_WAP4 on August 4, 2014, 21:46 GMT

Pitches for limited overs are likely to have some some juice in it come late season in Eng,also have some bounce in it.Swing will also play part depending on conditions. So safe to say Raina,Yuvi-swing,bounce-and Rohit,Dhawan-swing-are in for a struggle.

  • on August 4, 2014, 21:39 GMT

After the fifth test, England have six months before a big year of 17 tests against the best with Australia and South Africa the opposition as well as a couple against West Indies.

They should take advantage of the break by resting the top players for the never ending one day stuffin between and give the likes of Hales and one day specialists a go.

  • electric_loco_WAP4 on August 4, 2014, 21:36 GMT

With a struggling bowling unit and their poor recd. in limited overs esp. o/s Ind will certainly have to look @ recalling couple of fresh m/pacers who shone in IPL.Dinda,Vinay and Pankaj are best available options.Vinay is also best bowler in FC cricket.

My 15 man squad for endland tour will be as follows: Bhuvi/Shami rested Personally I dont like having Rohit & Dhawan open, they did well in india but I dont like their combination outside asia. So my openers will be Rahane & GG, just because they have better technique than both Rohit & Dhawan in seaming conditions and Rahane doesnt fit into the middle order. So 15, in playing order 1. Rahane 2. GG 3. Virat 4. Tiwari/Yuvi 5. MSD 6. Kedar Jadav 7. Jadeja 8. Ashwin/seamer 9. Mohit 10. Umesh 11. Aaron 12. Ishwar 13. Raina 14. Rohit..

Depending on conditions you can pick between Ashwin and a seamer, Jadeja is a good ODI bowler, economical. Reason I have yuvi & Tiwari battling it out is because I feel Yuvi adds an X-factor, and a 2-3 over bowling option. Kedar Jadav seems like a good #6 prospect, can score fast when needed. Rahane/GG add technique and experience at the top, Virat at 3 is Virat. 4,5.6 offer consolidation and big hitting. LETS GO INDIA! BE BOLD BE BRAVE! WIN

Considering the young talent that India has produced through its IPL franchises, it's now the time to give the likes of aspiring Akshar Patel, Samju Samson, Mohit Sharma and Ishwar Pandey a go. Also with the fact that Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shami showing alarming signs of fatigue, the selectors might rest them.
