Rory Hamilton-Brown, the Surrey allrounder, has been named England Under-19 captain for their Test series against Pakistan. Adil Rashid who, according to reports in the Saturday papers, had been named has now been allowed to remain with Yorkshire.
Martyn Moxon, the Yorkshire coach, had made his displeasure clear about Rashid being pulled away from county cricket. "I asked whether it was better for Adil to be bowling against the likes of Stuart Law and Brad Hodge and batting against Muttiah Muralitharan or playing Under-19s cricket?
"They said there was plenty of time for that later but where does county cricket sit in the development of young players?"
Now, though, Rashid will be available for Championship matches against Lancashire and Worcestershire. He has already played for England Lions, against the Indians this season, and took five wickets in the Roses match against Lancashire two weeks ago.
"The selectors have taken into account players who are producing performances in county first elevens and others playing consistently in 2nd XI cricket and still eligible for the Under-19's World Cup next February," said David Graveney, the chairman of selectors.
"Careful consideration was given to whether Adil Rashid should be included in the squad. It has been concluded that players in Adil's situation of having progressed to the next stage by representing the England Lions should not be pulled out of county first team cricket to play for England U-19s."
One notable name who has made the squad is 17-year-old James Harris who has been making a name for himself at Glamorgan this season. He became the youngest bowler to take 10 wickets in a Championship match against Gloucestershire.
The first Test, between August 4 and 7, was scheduled for New Road but after further recent flooding a new venue will have to be found. The second Test remains at Derby from August 9. The squad for the five-match ODI series will be named after the Test series.
