Pakistan series 'unlikely' - Thakur

BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur has all but ruled out the India-Pakistan series, given the short window ahead of India's limited-overs tour of Australia, which begins on January 12.

"It's 19th already and even if a decision comes in the next week, it might not be possible to host a series in such short notice," Thakur said at the press conference in Delhi, where the ODI and T20 squads for the tour of Australia were announced.

He, however, said the onus of making that call rested with Pakistan, who are the hosts for the series in accordance with the MoU signed between the BCCI and PCB. "This is not a decision for us to make," Thakur said. "It is for Pakistan to make should the Indian government grant permission. But, given the situation today, it appears difficult."

The series has remained in limbo for a while now with little progress made in the last few weeks. While the Pakistan government has green-lit the series, there has been no word from its Indian counterpart yet.

So, will Pakistan travel to India for T20 World Cup? Even if they don't get compensated for the cancelation by India? What Pakistani fans have to say?

What a shame! BCCI was never interested in playing an away series with Pakistan and they don't have a valid point in not adhering to the MOU. If they could play Pakistan in ICC tournaments then there is no reason why they cannot play them in a bilateral series. They know ICC won't take any action against them, guess who is the ICC Chariman? PCB has every right to demand financial compensation and they are fully justified if they boycott the ICC T20 competition.

@ABBYK2: What is sort of compensation do you think Pakistan should seek?

  • abbyk2 on December 23, 2015, 1:53 GMT

BCCI signed the MOU and did not honour it. Pakistan need to push for compensation. Who cares what the two governments are discussing at their meetings. India were quick enough to seek compensation from the West Indies. Pakistani administration don't sit around get on with it.

Excellent decision. There really isn't any excitement is such a series. It is only interesting to watch them in games like ODI WC and T20WC against each other. It's a good idea to keep them full of suspense when they meet rarely.

When India & Pakistan are so far apart in their friendly ties & trust, it was difficult if not impossible to have a Test Cricket series between the 2 teams. It is good that India is touring Australia to see if their winning Test streak vs.SA can be repeated in ODI's, overseas as well. Focus on local Cricket is an added bonus for some of the Cricketers to regain their lost form. It has also paved the way for some of the younger players to find their way into the Indian ODI team. Hopefully the Selectors learn from their selection mistakes, the formula for success is balance between specialist bowlers & batsmen. Ideally it should be 6 + 6 + 3 all rounders. India already has 2 bowling all rounders like Ashwin, Jadeja who are also the leading bowlers. This allows for an reserve WK + extra bat . Unfortunately the squad for the OZ lacks this balance!

Mervo.. I wish its all about cricket. Your comment is slightly out of depth. There are issues of mistrust beyond cricket. I guess until we both nations agree that live and let live like good cousins, the handshake will not be firm and cricket will have to wait.

This series will not solve everything. This is not meant to do that. It's supposed to be a mediator. What is it with you cynics anyway?

organise a tri series in England next summer. There's a large Asian population in England so there won't be any enpty seats throughout the series
