Wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel will lead Rest of India in the Irani Cup match against Ranji Trophy winners Rajasthan in October. Legspinner Rahul Sharma, who was ruled out of the recent Emerging Player's Tournament in Australia due to a back injury, has been included in the squad.

Delhi batsman Shikhar Dhawan was named Rest of India's vice-captain. The squad included Mumbai's Ajinkya Rahane, who made his international debut in the ODI series in England, where he opened with Parthiv. Rahane scored 158 runs in five ODIs, averaging 31.60 with one half-century on the tour. He had a strong domestic season in 2010-11, making 609 runs at an average of 87 in the Ranji Trophy.

Tamil Nadu's Abhinav Mukund, who scored 620 runs in the Ranji Trophy and made his Test debut for India on the West Indies tour earlier this year, was in the squad as was Manish Pandey, Karnataka's second-highest scorer in the previous domestic season. Jharkand fast bowler Varun Aaron, who was part of the ODI squad in England but didn't play, was also included.

The Irani Cup, the fixture that begins India's domestic first-class season, will be played in Jaipur from October 1 to 5.

Rest of India squad: Parthiv Patel (capt), Shikhar Dhawan, Abhinav Mukund, Ajinkya Rahane, Manish Pandey, Ravindra Jadeja, Mandeep Singh, Pragyan Ojha, Rahul Sharms, Umesh Yadav, Varun Aaron, Prashant Parmeshwaran, Pawan Suyal, Jalaj Saxena, C Gautham.

Parthiv is a new favorite these days. Where is the country's best opener after Sehwag......WASIM JAFFER. He should have been leading this Rest of India side. I mean there is no comparison between JAFFER and lesser mortals like Parthiv, Rahane, Mukund, Vijay, etc. JAFFER is the only Indian opener to have scored two double hundreds in Tests after Gavaskar and Sehwag. JAFFER is a class act. In terms of temperament, technique and shots JAFFER is even better than Gambhir. And he s an expereienced guy. He is only 33 but Hayden made his debut at 31 and Michael Hussey debuted at 32. JAFFER surely deserves another chance and he won't disappoint.

Out of 7 batsman, 5 (Parthiv Patel, Shikhar Dhawan, Abhinav Mukund, Ajinkya Rahane, Manish Pandey) are top order batsman(1,2 or 3 position) for there respective ranji teams. Certainly two of them will be playing in middle order. Big test for them.

It is good to see the next generation of the Indian team play against the Ranji Trophy Champions. I am particularly interested to see how the 2 spinners Rahul Sharma & ojha + the 2 pace bowlers Aeron & Jadev perform. These 4 may be the India's bowlers of the future. I also hope the selectors take special care to give these 4 bowlers the necessary coaching in the skills necessary to rise to major levels - including becoming a part of NCA. The Selectors+ Dhoni have a nasty habit of bringing a talented player in the squad to serve drinks before banishing him. This has left the Indian bowling totally inept and relying on Out of shape opening bowlers like Zaheer, Munaf or out of form spinners like Harbhajan. There were a host of pacemen in this classification such as I.Pathen, Balaji, Dinda,Nehra, Couple of Singhs, etc.Ojha, Ashwin have been bounced in and out like a Yo-Yo.Run a coaching camp & train these guys for 2 months & re-evaluate. Developing bowlers needs time & patience.

what about Pankaj Singh, Sudeep Tyagi and Manpreet Singh Gony?? They are very good tall fast bowlers and has performed reasonably well in domestic competitions as well. And I am happy that Vinay Kumar is kept out of it, I hope the selectors keep him out of Indian team as well.

I was very imporessed with Ajinkya Rahane, against England. He should give some of the stalwarts a run for their money. It is nice to see the two fastest bowlers in India, included in the squad. Both Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron should play. Rahul Sharma is a natural, and shouldn't be too far away from an India cap - given the sub-standard performance by Amit Mishra during his last essay. Parthiv Patel has led Gujarat from the front, and expect him to do like-wise in this game.
