World XI to play two Twenty20s in Pakistan

178

In a bid to revive international cricket in Pakistan, a World XI will play two exhibition Twenty20 matches against a Pakistan Star XI, the Sindh sports minister Dr Mohammad Ali Shah has announced.

The 'World XI' team - a name the ICC has objected to*, since, as per an AFP report, it "doesn't permit the names World or World XI for exhibition matches" - is comprised of former and active professional players from Sri Lanka, West Indies, South Africa and Afghanistan. The two matches will be played on October 20 and 21 at the National Stadium Karachi with former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya slated to lead the World XI against a Shahid Afridi-led Pakistan XI.

"World XI team will be arriving in Karachi on October 18 to play a series of two twenty20 matches," Shah said. "There are some notable player touring and this is a big breakthrough.

"I have been working from last one year to make this event possible. We have finalised all the arrangements to hold these matches in a befitting manner under tight security. Both matches will be played under floodlights. The event will give a soft image of Pakistan around the world and would encourage the teams to visit Pakistan."

"Around 5,000 policemen will be employed to avoid any lapse and we are sure that these arrangements will put the players at ease," said Shah. "All the players are excited over the prospect of visiting Pakistan."

The idea to bring a World XI to Pakistan was first lobbied a year ago, but the tour was cancelled twice earlier this year when PCB refused to sanction the tournament. The PCB has issued 'No Objection Certificates' to the contracted players due to participate this time and has allowed the use of the National Stadium, but all the logistic arrangements, broadcasting deals and security arrangements were made by Shah with the support of the local government in Karachi.

Pakistan has not had international cricket since terrorists ambushed the Sri Lanka team bus during a Test match in Lahore in March 2009. Since then, Pakistan has had to play most of their 'home' matches in the UAE. The PCB's recent attempt to have Bangladesh tour were stymied when the Bangladesh high court set a four-week embargo on the national team's plans to visit Pakistan, citing concerns over security.

World XI: Sanath Jayasuriya (capt), Ricardo Powell, Steven Taylor, Jermaine Lawson, Adam Sanford (West Indies), Justin Kemp, Loots Bosman, Andre Nel, Andre Seymore, Nantie Hayward (South Africa), Shapoor Zadran and Mohammad Shahzad (Afghanistan). Officials: Alvin Kallicharran (coach cum manager)

Pakistan XI: Shahid Afridi (capt), Younis Khan, Nasir Jamshed, Asad Shafiq, Shahzaib Hasan, Khalid Latif, Umar Akmal, Fawad Alam, Shoaib Malik, Umar Gul, Mohammad Sami, Wahab Riaz, Sarfraz Ahmed (wicketkeeper), Imran Nazir

This is truly a noble move on the part of Sanath Jayasuriya particularly, considering it's his Sri Lanka team that came under attack in 2009. All the men who have made the sacrifice and taken the 'risk' to be involved in such an initiative are deserving of our commendation and salutation. I am a West Indian, but I absolutely love Pakistan as a cricketing nation, and the country certainly deserves a return of cricket on home soil, especially considering the path of success in all formats of the game the team has been walking. Long live Pakistan cricket! Long live the sport!

It would have been better if they had played those matches against afghanistan or one of the domestic teams currently playing in Champions league. Because in the current format it wont help bring cricket back and willbe just a joke of a cricket match against old retired cricketers.

Is this some joke? What a waste of money ICC. Asking a bunch of individuals who may have forgotten cricket 3 years back to come back and play a match for World XI? Well if characters like AndreNel and others perform they may have a chance in IPL,BBL,SPL, BBL, and finally the lousy english County.

  • siddiqi on October 17, 2012, 15:12 GMT

Where are the official captains Hafeez and Misbah? Making Afridi captian of Pakistan ? why just because he is from karachi so next time whenever we play a match in PAKISTAN captain should be from that city.

  • on October 17, 2012, 14:59 GMT

A great effort by the world eleven team...Hopefull for cricket revival back in Pakistan and may Allah strengthen our beloved country,Pakistan <3

  • on October 17, 2012, 14:46 GMT

Good Job Pakistan Cricket Board, I would happy if they make Afridi Captain again, Mohd Hafezz does n't know how to utilize the extra ordinary skills of Afridi, Next World T20 in Bangladesh. Hope pakistan will win it.

  • Cpt.Meanster on October 17, 2012, 14:27 GMT

Sorry to say this Pakistani fans, but this is a meaningless fixture. Perhaps some Pakistani fans will cherish this act as something relevant BUT not REAL ones. Those who care about Pakistani cricket will know that nothing short of a FULL bilateral series played in Pakistan would satisfy their appetite. Until then such sideshows are most welcome I guess.

  • timtom on October 17, 2012, 13:52 GMT

Let me tell u the final scoreline too... 1-1 ....A show of goodwill :P

  • timtom on October 17, 2012, 13:51 GMT

Not enough !!even if another 100 such world XI`s tour pakistan, other countries are not going to tour.. because the REAL problem is not addressed yet. Except pak fans other can see the reason to it... Anyways atleast these X1`s shud provide some entertainment to PAK fans...

  • on October 17, 2012, 12:21 GMT

I am Happy that cricket is back in Pakistan.Good Job PCB.

  • arifzakaria811gmail.com on October 17, 2012, 11:29 GMT

lol at Hypocrisy of fans . If a senior citizen XI is coming to visit Pakistan it is due to efforts of PCB. No oneeven bothers to thank ICC for sanctioning it. But if no one visits Pakistan all blame ICC and say it is not doing enough.

  • Baber_Baloch on October 17, 2012, 10:54 GMT

Wishes from Sri lanka to the Pakistan and it cricket starved people & PCB for your efforts , having said that , I see lot on negative comments with regard to the players. Come on people , be happy that the PCB has done its best to put this internationls together and play in karachi.(hot spot). At least this will be the stepping stone for future International teams to be convinced that Pakistan is safe for International sports , be it Cricket/Footbal etc. Move on people , Your support in the most vital ingrediant att this moment.i

Surely there are some people who are not feeling good about the revival of International Cricket in Pakistan. Yeah! still we have security worries but not in all Pakistan. We have problems near Afghan Border. But the good thing is some Afghan players are also participating. My message for all those who criticizing this event is, if u not appreciate it, at least not depreciate it. You should support the game if u like it....Think About it....Best wishes for the Organizing committee and the Police for a successful series. To shut all the mouth which barking on revival of International Cricket in Pakistan...........

  • Sinhaya on October 17, 2012, 8:53 GMT

@Pappu_bhai, johnathonjosephs always talks sense. Not the so called first time he made a sensible comment. If you are talking about Sri Lanka getting whitewashed by Pakistan 3-0 in tests and 5-0 in ODIs, thats perfectly ok because Pakistan is always honest and dont depend on umpiring howlers to succeed. If you are saying that we won against Pakistan in June and July this year due to umpiring errors, yes thats true but we lost to India in July this year also due to our own useless umpires like Kumar Dharmasena. If DRS was there, result would have been 3-2 either way and not 4-1 India.

Good move by PCB , It will more promsing when some current pool of players will attend the match ...apart from Afgani still no body has guts to play in Pakistan !! No Aussies,English,NZs,Indians ..Pls call a National except SL and Afgani team for the good move .

  • on October 17, 2012, 7:48 GMT

doesnt know why people are too upset that the name should be not World 11 guy what strong with that players are around the world that why it is said world 11 if they are good players called stars then it is said ALL STARS not world 11

  • maverick.arora on October 17, 2012, 7:36 GMT

I don't think it is time yet for Pakistan to host matches of any sort. I disagree with anyone who deems Pakistan as safe. Hundreds of innocent lives are lost every single day in the metropolitan cities in Pakistan. Why would international invite trouble? Radicals and militancy is on the rise in Pakistan.

While it is a great gesture by the organizers, I feel the ICC and the should ponder and give it a second thought.

Guys this is not a match under PCB. It has only supported it. Its all KCCA and Ali Shah who are setting it up, and the aim of international reputed players coming to Pakistan has been acheived. Most of these players can still play good cricket though. Kemp, Bosman, Jayasuria, Powell, Shehzad are wonderful hitters....

Nel, Hayword were decent seamers, Zadran is impressive like Akhtar in his early days

Players should be commended if this tour goes through, since their families will be mighty concerned. Condition in Pakistan have gone only worse since that attack on Sl team... But after that attack some one made a comment that no security could have saved the players if this level of attack was undertaken..... I know Pak is trying to revive cricket in its home country which is their right but I feel that they should not go haphazard about it, I hope they have a proper shockproof plan.

  • on October 16, 2012, 19:26 GMT

good news . Good to see cricket matches taking place in Pakistan. My only concern is the team selection . Did PCB select this side or Dr. Shah ? They could have atleast included Harris Sohail ,Junaid Khan , Raza Hasan............ and the list goes on and on. Having said that , I think the teams are equally matched if Yonus, Shazaib, Fawad, Latif & Sami all play !!!!!!!!!

  • on October 16, 2012, 16:42 GMT

@Ash Enoon - it's the kind of reckless remark you make which almost makes people respond with "yeah, no Indian players - cuz they'd rather be alive. If it needs 5000 policement for two t20 matches you know the story anyway!'' Besides it's a team of 'has-been's in world XI barring the two Afghan players. Even the Pak XI team is full of players whose int'l T20 career is over or on the wane. As a lover of cricket, and not just an Indian, I wish all the best but to be very honest - the team composition has made it more of a joke. Pakistan cricket and it's fans deserve better.

  • on October 16, 2012, 16:42 GMT

#waqar ahmed: hay bro, excuze me. this isnot Karachi XI because Umar Akmal, Imran nazir are from Punjab

  • Joji_ on October 16, 2012, 16:26 GMT

@people who are questioning the name worldXI:

It was named worldXI by the same people who nammed CLT20 as Champions League!!

Although i love to see cricket in Pakistan. i Live in Rawalpindi, evesince i have started working and earning money, i didnt get chance to watch cricket in pindi stadium due to terrorist attacks on SL team. I have memories from the past when we used to see Int Teams visiiting Pakistan and live cricket in pindi cricket stadium. BUT having said that, i would not want cricket back in pakistan at this point in time. WHY??? I am scared if if if there is a lapse...boy cricket is gone for long long longgggggg... time....So may be another year or so, lets wait ofr more improvement in law and order and security, then we can invite. For me its too early to resume international cricket in Pak. Asim from Rawalpindi (Been Watching cricket since 1992)

  • on October 16, 2012, 16:05 GMT

Ideally Pakistan should have played Afghanistan or someone in these 2 matches instead. Would've meant something hope it goes well but I doubt :)

  • on October 16, 2012, 15:51 GMT

Will love to see Afridi as Captain again.... :)

  • on October 16, 2012, 15:41 GMT

Shahid Afridi (Khyber Agency / Karachi), Asad Shafiq, Shahzaib Hasan, Khalid Latif, Fawad Alam, Mohammad Sami, Sarfraz Ahmed -> 7 Karachi based Sindh Players

Younis Khan (Mardan / Peshawar), Umar Gul (Peshawar) -> 2 KPK Players

Shoaib Malik (Sialkot), Imran Nazir (Sialkot), Umar Akmal (Lahore), Nasir Jamshed (Lahore), Wahab Riaz (Lahore) -> 5 Punjab Players

@Waqar Ahmed! It is Pakistan XI. Matches are organized by Karachi based people. So what's the big deal, if they have more players?

  • on October 16, 2012, 15:35 GMT

There are no security issues in Pak, all those making refrences to odd incidensts in the North East, please look at your own cities, the fact of the matter is, no suicide bombings happen in Pak main cities anymore, all this negativety is coming from our so called Indian brothers. The anti Pak lobby needs to take a break and realise that Pak Cricket team is still one of the most desirable team to play, just look at the number of Pak fans who have travelled to each country in the last 3 years. Sri Lanka last week mentioned that Pak fans are very profitable during the 2 last world cups, we may not be 1 billion strong, but we are still 200 million and thats enough to make Pak a very interesting prospect indeed. Go Green Shirts.

  • on October 16, 2012, 15:32 GMT

Better you should have played 2 Official T20 International with Afghanistan rather than selecting only 2 Afghan players in World XI .Afghanistan is a much better side than this world XI because they gave tough time to the time like India in world cup .

  • ankit_barry on October 16, 2012, 15:25 GMT

If this is World Eleven, then i am Aristotle :):)

  • CRmadrid on October 16, 2012, 15:22 GMT

A great initiative. Pakistan is great country with great cricketers. It was one off tragic incident happened to our SL team during the tour. That doesn't mean that they are not allowed to play cricket forever. Love to see Sana boy coming forward for this. Wish all goes well & hope to see more cricket tournaments taking place. And for ppl laughing at this, i feel pity for them. We all Sri Lankans, Pakistanis & rest of the world love it.Congrats again.Good luck!

I'm a Bangladeshi fan and I would love to see Cricket return to Pakistan. I remember a lot of games played in Pakistan great atmosphere. Hopefully we can give the support Pakistan deserves to host International Cricket and hopefully Bangladesh will tour there as well soon again all the best greetings!

  • Varun_R123 on October 16, 2012, 15:17 GMT

They can organize a match between Pakistan and Afghanistan if the Afghan board agree. It will be more competitive. :-)

  • PAKISTANiLive on October 16, 2012, 15:14 GMT

This is not World's Best XI, its just for revive International Cricket in Pakistan!

  • on October 16, 2012, 15:06 GMT

    well come to all vister......

  • Baundele on October 16, 2012, 15:02 GMT

Good idea. Being not associated to any particular country and no international future these players will not be attacked. This will work as making the security concerns a bit softer. International teams will not travel Pakistan right away; but it is a step forward.

  • on October 16, 2012, 14:59 GMT

good news! people down there have been starved off of cricket and i hope security arrangements remain in place what the officials claim to have in place. Pakistan is a nice place to play cricket, I still remember the 2004 odi series between India and Pakistan, promoted as the friendship cup and the crowd was amazing.

  • on October 16, 2012, 14:54 GMT

We from Sri Lanka would wish that pakistan officials would do a great job and make this tournament a success so that cricket will return to pakistan soon as possible and as an Asian we would love to see Pakistan grounds also getting some matches and our fellow pakistani cricket lovers cheering their own side in their own grounds in their motherland!! all the best to the organizers and we as Sri Lankans would be fully praying to have good competitive 2 matches in the beautiful country called Pakistan!!!!!

  • on October 16, 2012, 14:52 GMT

  • on October 16, 2012, 14:37 GMT

All those who are saying this is`nt a perfect world 11.why don`t you visit Pakistan and make the team? Its easy for you to say when no other international player is ready to come here. These guys are taking a wonderful step, cricket will only be revived this way in pakistan. Its not like the Aussie team or any other international team will come here without any proof of safety. These games will provide the evidence that Pakistan is a safe place!

  • on October 16, 2012, 14:36 GMT

beware of nantie hayward... not sure if he'll bowl lyk he used to, but an amazing talent completely ignored by SA!!!

  • Rahul17_1983 on October 16, 2012, 14:30 GMT

  • Rajesh_india_1990 on October 16, 2012, 14:21 GMT

Sad to see world eleven players life is under threat:-(

  • on October 16, 2012, 14:16 GMT

@ Topic - Good news, really. Although I didn't get the logic of creating a team of Oldies except Afg players and calling it a 'World XI' but more importantly its purpose is to revive International Cricket in Pakistan. So Good luck for that. Can't wait to see Ricardo Powell and our own Angry-Young-Man NEL in action.

  • MJawwadA on October 16, 2012, 14:11 GMT

@ Waqar Ahmed: Nasir Jamshed, Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz, Imran Nazir??

  • on October 16, 2012, 14:09 GMT

I don't think the make-up of each side really matters. It's whether or not this actually happens and without incident.

  • Stark62 on October 16, 2012, 14:08 GMT

If only Afridi had lead a similar side (with a few additions and subtractions here and there) in the T20 WC, then Pak would have won the WC.

Also, I would love to see the match live and wanted to know; will it be broadcasted on any channel?

  • Usmanaftab24 on October 16, 2012, 14:08 GMT

  • on October 16, 2012, 13:46 GMT

lol 5000 policeman just for these matches is way too much something is already wrong. If it goes wrong again then its clear Cricket will never return to Pakistan all the best though ;)

  • Rahul17_1983 on October 16, 2012, 13:39 GMT

Breaking News: Avg age of World XI is 35 yrs(Excluding Afghani Players). And there r many debutants too like Andre Seymore,Steven Taylor. The headline should be pakistan XI vs Veteran XI.haha..So for last 1 yr Zaka was working on this team to revive the cricket.Gr8

  • on October 16, 2012, 13:38 GMT

No Indians players? Yeyyy :) (From srilanka)

  • on October 16, 2012, 13:33 GMT

This is Karachi XI, not Pakistan XI. So keep the controversy out. However, would be great to see Andre Nel, Hayward & Lawson as pace attack!!

  • Z.Saleem on October 16, 2012, 13:30 GMT

  • NYer on October 16, 2012, 13:21 GMT

Many of the "World XI" players haven't played in ages. The two best players will be two Afghani players. It would be more of a contest if all XI players were from Afghanistan.

  • on October 16, 2012, 13:20 GMT

Positive aspect-----Revival of cricket in Pakistan. Negative ASPECT---------new CONTROVERSY OF Pakistan CAPTAIN.

  • CricketPissek on October 16, 2012, 13:15 GMT

As a Sri Lanka cricket fan with painful memories of the attack, I cannot help by worry about the safety of these players. But also, as a Sri Lankan who lived through 25 years of the civil war, I also appreciate the importance of bringing the game back to this country. I sincerely hope the PAK officials have done all they can to mitigate the risk.

  • AzAb12754 on October 16, 2012, 12:50 GMT

Cricket will never return in Pakistan not even Canada plays a series with them and even a team of their calibre did it won't at all make a difference to the bigger teams playing in Pakistan. Zim or Ban don't even want to tour :D
