Scorecard
Queensland's innings was topped and tailed by Victoria but in between times Peter Forrest overturned a wretched summer's form with a century in the Sheffield Shield match at the MCG.
Winning the toss and batting first on a warm day, the Bulls slipped as low as 5 for 90 against the left-arm swing bowling of Will Sheridan, while Fawad Ahmed marked his Shield debut for the Bushrangers by pinning Nathan Reardon LBW.
But Forrest regained the sturdy touch that had him playing ODIs for Australia last year, composing a sure-footed hundred while at the other end his captain James Hopes played more expansively. Forrest's innings was a welcome change in fortune after his first seven Shield appearances this summer had returned 184 runs at 15.33, numbers that have cast him well out of international contention.
Together with Hopes he took the visitors to 5 for 259, before the final five wickets went down more swiftly than the first five. Ahmed defeated Forrest with a leg break, and another slow bowling debutant, the left-arm spinner Clive Rose, picked up three wickets to leave the match well and truly open at the conclusion of day one.
