Scorecard
Joe Burns scored 68 in an opening partnership worth 124 to underpin a collective bowling performance led by James Hopes, as Queensland, having opted to bowl, took charge in Hobart.
Hopes' four-for and supporting hands from debutant right-arm seamer Mark Steketee and legspinner Cameron Boyce helped Queensland skittle Tasmania for 149 in 46.3 overs. Hopes removed Ed Cowan and captain Alex Doolan for ducks, before dismissing Tim Paine and Luke Butterworth off successive balls in the 37th over.
Jordan Silk resisted briefly through 39 off 80 balls, while Ben Dunk counterattacked to lend some respectability to the innings. Dunk cracked four fours and four sixes in scoring 71 at close to a run a ball, before he was stumped by Cameron Boyce.
Dunk, though, lacked substantial assistance from the other end, with as many as seven Tasmania batsmen failing to move into double figures.
In reply, Burns and Charlie Hemphrey gave Queensland a strong start. The stand ended when left-arm seamer Sam Rainbird had Burns caught behind in the 36th over. Two overs later, Peter Forrest was pinned lbw by Jackson Bird for 1, but Hemphrey remained unbeaten on 47, and Queensland finished the opening day on 2 for 135, trailing by 14.
