Sanath Jayasuriya has received another blow after being left out of the 20 players Sri Lanka Cricket offered central contracts for the current year. Muttiah Muralitharan, who will retire from Tests at the end of the first game against India at Galle on July 22, has been retained in the top category.

Jayasuriya, 41, who became a permanent fixture in the Sri Lanka side after playing a key role in the 1996 World Cup, found himself dropped from the list. The veteran of 110 Tests and 444 ODIs has stated that he would like to play until the 2011 World Cup before finally calling it quits. However, his recent batting form has been poor. In the World Twenty20 in the West Indies he averaged only 3.75 from six matches and in his last six ODI matches his highest score was 31.

"We had discussions over the last few weeks with senior players, Sri Lanka Cricket, selectors and team management to try and put a value on the national contracts," Sri Lanka's chairman of selectors Aravinda de Silva said. "In that regard we decided we will try and reduce the number of national contracted players to 20 rather than have one of over 30 which are currently in existence. We felt that having that number of players will give us the cream to be signed up on a contract for the national squad.

"The contracts are worked out on the previous year's performances and in Sanath's case, since he had not performed up to expectations, we decided to leave him out. We also allowed him to go to England and play some county cricket to see how he performs. As I've said before we haven't let either Chaminda Vaas or Muralitharan out of our minds for the World Cup."

de Silva said that when the contracts were done and due to be signed in March no one knew that Muralitharan was going to retire. "To be fair by Murali he mentioned to us that we could leave him out of the contract and consider him only for the one-dayers if we require him, which I have basically from our side told him that we definitely require him for the World Cup," de Silva said. "We will evaluate the contract matter with Murali once we have a chat with him. He will have to remain because he will definitely be part of the World Cup campaign."

The two newcomers to the central contracts are off-spinner Suraj Randiv and batsman Dinesh Chandimal who have been placed in Category Six. Sri Lanka's captain Kumar Sangakkara, Muralitharan, Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Thilan Samaraweera occupy the top category.

The other contracted players are: Nuwan Kulasekara (Category Two), Angelo Mathews (Category Three), Upul Tharanga, Thilan Thushara, Rangana Herath, Prasanna Jayawardene, Ajantha Mendis, Chamara Kapugedera, Lasith Malinga, Thilina Kandamby (Category Four), Dilhara Fernando, Chanaka Welagedara, Tharanga Paranavitana (Category Five).

All the teams and great players in the world Just give Murali(The Legend) a tribute which even not enough...he is just not compared with anyone in bowling apart from the Paceman Wasim Akram and Chaminda Vaas...who are the other greats...

Guys give Sanath a Break since people are expecting from him too much as he is being at an age of 41 now..let him go to the county and comeback vth a blast...obviously he will be picked for the worldcup if he performs..since they have several other players who can perform like jayasurya..

But right now its Murali...and only murali..since Players and people respect his ability..players like Tendulkar,Lara who are the batting legends even can pay a tribute which they normally do him..

India what ever the series it may be but i would request all of you to enjoy the game vth SL and Muralitharan..as he repects Sachin andf wants himsekf to bowl to him..

We Miss You Murali..total world Misses you...

Malinga and Matthews should be at level 2. Not sure why Samaraweera is a leve 1? He's a 3 or at the most a 2? Is this based on seniority only?

Seriously? Some people think that Sanath was disrespected or should still be considered for the side because of all things he has done in the past? Seriously? I love and appreciate the way Sanath used to play and what he did to cricket in Sri Lanka. I also love the work that older players in the past like Duleep Mendis, Kurruppu, Arjuan, Aravinda did for cricket. Should we bring them back to the team now too?? How about Sanath giving himself some self respect and retiring when his form dropped and not decide to mix politics with sports? Sanath needs to take a page from other class acts in the past including Aravinda and retire gracefully. Also, making the Sri Lankan cricket team is not a way of paying tribute to a legend .That's what awards, statues, administrative posts and holidays are for. The Sri Lankan team is there to bring together the best cricket talent at the present time so they can WIN for Sri Lanka. The team is not there to worship stubborn dinosaurs.

I don't understand why some people here want Sanath to carry on playing. He is 41 years old and its a ripe age to retire and let young blood take his place and he should know by now that when he is still there he is an obstacle/barrier to any young cricketer who wants to take his place. Isn't this unfair by a senior player? Also, he's got politics to deal with and a politician has to a responsible person. How can you devote your time to politics when you are continuously playing cricket lie this? Also, his form has been dreadful in the past year or so and therefore has been a very unproductive player and such players should be removed. I appreciate his contribution to SLC in the past but he should retain that dignity and retire because if he doesn't, he is losing all that respect.

Mr. De Silva is the best selector we've ever had as always looks to the future of SLC. Well Done and an excellent decision taken.

I have to agree with JP_2005 on this one! Jayasuriya did go late in the batting order. He definitely contributed with his bowling earlier this year ! He is a batting all rounder ! to have a bad year or two for a good player is a part of cricket or any other sport! He is still very athletic(sometimes even more than any of the younger players) Maybe he should't play for the first 11, but he should be in the team ! He is definitely not the only one who didn't have a good year!! during the 20/20 only Mahela and Mattews were inform! We would have got knocked out earlier in the tournament if it wasn't for Mahela's 100's ! And Matthews definitely needs to be in the TOP catergory ! He is an amazing all rounder! I predict that one day he will captain the SL Team ! Also I dont like the fact that we only have a 20 man contract ! Then what would be the incentive for the other 10-20 players to play for Sri Lanka, (when they are not going to get paid)! I hope all works out in favorSL and we winWC'11

Oh!! what a poor farewell for a Legendary lankan cricketer .... Cannot blame Aravinda for this... It is Sanath how should have taken a correct decision rather than being disappointed ... There is still no replacement for Sanath in Srilanka for his devastating performances as a match winner in the shorter version of the game... Time to retire ... 41 is 2 much now-days...

Aravinda should give respect to Sanath. . He is still best. . . Dilshan and Tharanga can play only on subcontinent pitches. . Even Mahela and Sanga struggle on fast pitches. . . Sanath is only 1 player who can play anywhere. . . Aravinda and Sanga are selfish. . . I don't think Methews will become 1/3 of Sanath. . .

wow! cant believe some people here still wants Sanath to have a contract! what the hell? if Sanath can be in the team my be Aravinda himself could play..And I am sure he will do a better job! Sanath is a legend. He has changed the way cricket was played and he was very instrumental in Sri Lanka becoming a force in ODI cricket! but he should have realised couple of years ago that he is no longer the Jayasuriya he was and retired gracefully like Murali is doing now! atleast now he realise that he should ! only way he can come back to the WC ODI team is if Dilshan and Tharanga fails really badly in the next few months! I really dont think that will happen and it will be a waste If Sanath takes the place at no7 ahead of some one like Jeevan Mendis or Thisera Perera!
