Australia v South Africa 1910-11

Played at Sydney, Friday, Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, March 3, 4, 6, 7

15-Apr-1912
Played at Sydney, Friday, Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, March 3, 4, 6, 7. Australia won by seven wickets. The rubber having been already decided, the fifth and last of the Test Matches naturally suffered in interest. As at Melbourne a fortnight before, Sherwell on winning the toss put the Australians in to bat. Rain had saturated the wicket, and the game could not be commenced till just before half-past two. Again Sherwell"s policy resulted in disaster to his side. The pitch improved after the first hour or so, and at the end of the afternoon the Australian score was 281 for three wickets. The South Africans were always playing an uphill game, and Australia won by seven wickets. Following his two hundreds for New South Wales, Macartney played a splendid innings of 137. He hit sixteen 4"s gave no chance, and was batting for nearly three hours and a quarter. When South Africa followed-on, Zulch made a great effort. He batted extremely well in the latter half of his innings, but he might have been out three times before he had scored seventy. The Australians required 198 to win but, with the wicket in first-rate order, the task caused them no anxiety, Trumper finishing off the game in brilliant style.
