Some fine fast bowling by Malcolm and Lewis, on a pitch providing pace and bounce, had New Zealand in all kinds of trouble. Wright, Jones and Crowe were out with only 53 on the board, and they then lost Rutherford and Hadlee to injuries before the fourth wicket fell. Rutherford was hit above the left eye, trying to hook Lewis early in his innings; Hadlee, struck on the right hand by Lewis, did not resume after lunch and X-rays revealed a broken bone below the knuckle. Greatbatch held the innings together, advancing defiantly to his second hundred of the series. Priest helped him add 81 and Smith 28 before Greatbatch sliced Malcolm to third man in the 54th over. His 111, from 130 balls, contained a six and ten fours. New Zealand's target hardly looked enough, but when Hadlee, despite his injured hand, removed Gower and Smith in a lovely opening spell, and Pringle trapped Lamb in the sixth over, England were themselves struggling. Gooch saw off the openers and then weathered a dangerous spell by Morrison. He lost Stewart straight after tea, having added 75 for the fourth wicket in 80 minutes, but Russell then joined him in a match-winning stand producing 109 runs in 97 minutes. Gooch hit fifteen fours in his 112 not out (152 balls), and ensured that England not only squared the series but, by winning with 5.3 overs to spare, took the Texaco Trophy on run-rate.
