England v West Indies

Richard Hobson
15-Apr-2005
At Leeds, July 1 (day/night). England won by seven wickets. England 6 pts. Toss: England.
Nine days after declaring that Flintoff should rest his injured foot for a fortnight, England brought back their all-rounder as a specialist batsman, which spoke volumes for their desperation. A lop-sided team included only three front-line bowlers but, as Vaughan admitted, they got away with it. Harmison responded to the demands heaped upon his coat-hanger shoulders by recording what were then his best figures in a one-day international, and passed 96mph on the speed gun. Anderson, meanwhile, endorsed his own reputation as a bowler with a golden arm by making inroads with good and bad deliveries alike. The fielding, too, was much improved. Had Anderson held a sharp chance offered by Sarwan on nine, England's victory would have been more emphatic. Instead, Sarwan added 63 with Powell, until they went in successive overs. With Trescothick hinting at his powerful best and Strauss uninhibited in chasing a small target, England won in comfort. There was even a huge Flintoff six along the way.
Man of the Match: S. J. Harmison. Attendance: 15,792; receipts £417,508.
